MEMPHIS, Tenn. – Millsaps softball sophomore outfielder
Molli Perry broke a single-season school record by tallying six stolen bases in game two of a doubleheader at Rhodes College. The Majors claimed game one, 8-4 and game two, 8-6 at the Rhodes Softball Field, competing in their first true away games since Feb. 27.
Game One: 8-4
Senior infielder
Katelyn Norse (two runs) blasted a solo homer which highlighted five Majors tallying multiple hits in game one. Fourth-year infielder
Emily Cook and sophomore shortstop
Savanah Stafford both notched game-highs of two RBIs each.
Pitchers
Cassidy Thrash and
Hannah Derouen were solid on the mound as they combined to yield only one earned run.
Millsaps (10-15, 5-3 SAA) struck first in the top of the second with RBIs from Cook and
Savanah Stafford to score sophomore outfielder
Katie Norris and Norse. With the bases loaded in the top of the third,
Camille Black was hit by a pitch and Cook hit an RBI to push their lead to 4-0. Later in the inning, Stafford hit an RBI-single to assist Norris to home plate.
The Majors would then gain even more separation for a 6-0 advantage in the top of the fourth inning, when senior outfielder
Kat Reeves capitalized on an error by the Lynx.
Rhodes (8-15, 0-8 SAA) narrowed their deficit by scoring four runs in the bottom of the fourth inning, but Millsaps responded with an RBI-single from Perry to score senior outfielder
Valirea Sentelle.
Derouen did an excellent job keeping the Lynx' batters honest in the final three innings, before Norse cranked a solo homer in the top of the seventh to put on the finishing touches of an 8-4 game one victory.
Game Two: 8-6
Designated player
Mackenzie Fleming was terrific at the plate with three RBIs and two hits in game two. All three of her RBIs helped score Perry (six stolen bases, three runs scored, three hits and one RBI).
Norse (three RBIs and two runs scored) and Cook also marked two hits each.
Fleming continued the Majors' hot hitting in the top of the first inning with an RBI-single to score Perry. Later in the third inning, the same duo would strike again as a Fleming tallied a sac-RBI to bring Perry home for a 2-0 advantage.
Rhodes matched the Majors on the scoreboard with two runs in the bottom of the third, but Norse help Millsaps regain the lead at 4-2 with her second home run on the day in the fourth.
Fleming and Perry once again combined for their third RBI-run in the bottom of the fifth to bolster Millsaps' to 5-2. Rhodes would not go away quietly as they tied the game up at 5-5 in the bottom of the fifth.
The Majors showed poise in the top of the sixth inning when an RBI-double from Norse helped send senior infielder
Brooklyn Wascom home. Later in the inning, an RBI-single by Perry rewarded Norse to help her round the bases. Nolen also scored when she and Perry combined for a double steal to give the Majors an 8-5 advantage.
Rhodes scored one run in the top of the sixth, but the Majors would hold strong and prevail with the 8-6 win.
