JACKSON, Miss. – Millsaps senior pitcher
Cassidy Thrash tossed a four-hit, complete game en route to a game two victory, downing MUW 2-1 on Tuesday. The Millsaps softball team split a pair of games with the Owls inside the Millsaps Softball Complex. Thrash added six strikeouts in the win.
Game One: L, 6-5
Outfielder
Molli Perry and third baseman
Camille Black accumulated two hits each. Relief pitcher
Hannah Derouen was solid inside the circle as she struck out five batters in the final three innings.
The W got on the scoreboard when their lead-off batter rounded the bases for a 1-0 lead after the first inning. With a runner threatening to score from second base in the top of the second inning, Perry made an incredible diving catch in centerfield to help keep the score at bay.
The Owls added a second run in the top of third and crossed two more base runners in the fourth for a 4-0 lead. With two runners in scoring position, the Majors seemed primed to score when
Alli Nolen sent a ball deep near the left field warning track but the ball would be caught to keep the score the same.
The Majors scored their first run of the game when
Kat Reeves hit a hard ground ball in between the shortstop's legs to score
Valirea Sentelle.
Magen Authement then made it a 4-2 game with an RBI looped into centerfield to send Reeves home.
MUW would extend their lead back to four runs with a two-run homer in the top of the sixth. Showing resilience, Millsaps would once again respond when Nolen and Perry both notched RBIs to cut the deficit to 6-4.
In the final inning,
Emily Cook almost made it a one-run game when she pummeled a ball off the top of the fence.
Brooklyn Wascom would then come in to pinch run and eventually scored on a passed ball to make the score 6-5. With the tying run in scoring position, the Owls would eventually hold with a pop-up on for the narrow victory.
Game Two: W, 2-1
Thrash was sensational as she struck out six batters and tossed a no-hitter through the first five innings.
After four innings of limited offensive action, Millsaps struck first when Sentelle put the ball in play and Wascom (two hits) scored from second when the Owls' first baseman mishandled the catch.
Millsaps' lead would be short lived when the Owls would knot the game at 1-1 with a first-pitch homer to left field.
Late game heroics would come from the senior Wascom as she lasered a ball through the left side to allow Black to score the go-ahead run in the bottom of the sixth.
The W would get the tying run in scoring position, but the Majors' defense would hold strong following a base hit when Sentelle threw out the runner at home from right field for the final out of the game.
Millsaps will next travel to Sewanee for a three-game conference series, beginning at noon on Saturday. Live stats and video will be available at gomajors.com.
