Softball Takes Two from Tigers as Molli Perry Sets SAA Conference Steals Record

Majors’ Offense Pulls Away in 10-5, 17-5 Road Victories on Saturday

SEWANEE, Tenn. – For the second consecutive weekend, the Millsaps softball team claimed two road wins in a Southern Athletic Association, Saturday doubleheader. The Majors bested Sewanee, 10-5 in seven innings and 17-5 in five innings at Tiger Field.

Sophomore Molli Perry totaled seven steals on the day to surpass the conference-only steals record of 17. The Kaplan, La., product now has 21 conference steals and 36 overall.

Game One: 10-5

Junior pitcher Hannah Derouen impressed with a career-high eight strikeouts, while yielding four runs and one walk in 4.2 IP. Fellow Louisiana native Brianna Newman picked up the win with two strikeouts and no earned runs in 2.1 IP.

Offensively senior outfielder Kat Reeves was fantastic going 3-for-5 with four RBIs and totaling three runs and two stolen bases. Junior DP Mackenzie Fleming went 2-for-4 with three RBIs and a walk. Millsaps tallied 14 hits as six Majors recorded multi-hit games.

The Majors didn't waste any time showing they meant business on Saturday, striking first in the opening inning for a 1-0 edge. Junior catcher Magen Authement doubled to score Reeves from third.

Sewanee would soon answer to tie the game at 1-1 in the bottom of the second. Millsaps responded with a big four-run, fourth inning to secure a 5-1 advantage. The first five Majors would reach base and both Reeves and Fleming garnered two RBIs to cash in on the big inning.

The Tigers would claw their way back to tie the contest yet again at 5-5 with three runs in the fifth and one run in the sixth.

Undaunted, Millsaps erupted for a clutch, five-run seventh inning. Authement would reach base on a hit by pitch before the next two Majors would ground out. Millsaps would collect five hits with two outs to create a 10-5 advantage.

Senior Katelyn Norse provided the go-ahead RBI to score Authement from third. Classmate Brooklyn Wascom, Reeves (two RBIs) and Fleming would provide hits to bring home their teammates.

Millsaps would tally the last three outs with two force plays and a ground out to earn the game one triumph.

Game Two: 17-5 (5 inn.)

Millsaps (13-17, 7-4 SAA) continued its momentum into game two, claiming a 7-0 advantage by the middle of the third inning. A total of four Majors had at least two RBIs, while six scored two or more runs and six had multi-hit afternoons.

Wascom (2-for-4) accumulated a career-best four RBIs, while freshman Alli Nolen was unstoppable (4-for-4, two runs). Sophomore Molli Perry (3-for-5, three runs, one RBI) was incredible on the bases with five more steals to set the conference-only steals record. Her 21 bettered the mark of 17 set by Brittany Tuttle of Berry in 2018.

All nine Major hitters would post an at-bat in the opening inning as Millsaps would build a 4-0 cushion. Senior Emily Cook would score Reeves in the second and Wascom would double home Norse and Nolen in the third to push the Millsaps lead to 7-0.

Sewanee (3-22, 1-8 SAA) would get on the scoreboard with three tallies in the bottom of the inning.

Both teams would score in the fourth inning. Nolen doubled to score Valirea Sentelle before the Tigers scored twice to make it an 8-5 game.

The Majors would explode for nine runs in the fifth to put the run-rule in action. After scoring one run, Millsaps continued by posting five hits, two walks, two steals and a hit by pitch with two outs.

The Tigers' next three batters would ground or fly out to give Millsaps two wins on the day.

The series now wraps up on Sunday, beginning at 11 a.m. Live stats and video will be available at gomajors.com.
