Sewanee Tops Softball in Sunday Pitcher’s Duel

Majors Fall 2-1 on the Road, Claim Two Wins in the Series

SEWANEE, Tenn. – The Millsaps softball team was bested in a pitcher's duel against Sewanee on Sunday, falling 2-1. Millsaps claimed the series win, however, with two wins on Saturday at Tiger Field.

Millsaps (13-18, 7-5 SAA) tallied four hits on the day, while Sewanee (4-22, 2-8 SAA) were held to six hits. Senior Hayleigh Rogers (one strikeout, one walk, two unearned runs) tallied four innings pitched and sophomore Brianna Newman (one walk) kept the Tigers scoreless in 2.0 IP.

Kat Reeves, Ty Bergeron, Katelyn Norse and Brooklyn Wascom (one RBI) all recorded one hit in game three.

Sewanee would use a pair of hits and two Millsaps errors in the first inning to claim an early 2-0 advantage. Junior Amber Clark (Clinton, Miss.) would walk in the second to become the first base runner for the Majors.

The Tigers would hold and leadoff the fourth with a single and move the runner to second with a sacrifice bunt. Reeves made a diving catch in left field and a ground out ended the threat.

Millsaps would use that momentum to get on the scoreboard in the fifth. With two outs, senior Norse would single and steal second. Her classmate Wascom would then proceed and launch a double to the right-center field fence to make the score 2-1.

The Majors looked ready to tie the game in the sixth when Reeves began the sixth with a hit by pitch and steal of second. Unfortunately, the next three batters would fail to reach base and send the game to the seventh.

Sewanee would open the final frame with a walk and bunt single, but Millsaps held tough as with three straight outs.

Bergeron would reach base in the seventh with one out. Sewanee's pitching would then brick wall the comeback effort once more for a 2-1 win to conclude the series.

Millsaps is now scheduled to host Belhaven on Wednesday, weather permitting, beginning at 6 p.m. Live stats and video will be available at gomajors.com.
