JACKSON, Miss. – With the Millsaps softball team celebrating eight student-athletes for Senior Day, freshman outfielder
Abbi Tycer crushed the walk-off, two-RBI single in Game One of a doubleheader split with the No. 12 Berry Vikings inside the Millsaps Softball Complex on Saturday. The victory served as the Vikings' first lost in conference play this season.
The Majors honored the accomplishments of
Ty Bergeron,
Masey Blancett,
Emily Cook,
Katelyn Norse,
Kat Reeves,
Hayleigh Rogers,
Cassidy Thrash and
Brooklyn Wascom.
Game One: W, 5-4
The lead-off batters for both teams reached scoring position, but the defenses would hold strong to keep the game scoreless after the first inning.
Berry would notch the first run of the game with a well-placed, RBI-triple in the top of the third inning. The Majors would respond when an infield sac hit from Cook, which helped score
Molli Perry (two runs) to tie the game at 1-1.
The Majors claimed the lead when Norse belted the ball to right center to assist the lightning-fast Perry from first to home in the bottom of the fifth. Berry would answer immediately when their lead-off hitter hit a homer to center field to knot the game at 2-2. The Vikings would then go up by a score of 3-2 with a sac bunt in the top of the sixth.
The game would once again be tied at 3-3 when Bergeron lasered a ball up the middle to send
Amber Clark home going into the seventh inning.
After yielding a run and going down 4-3 in the final inning, Millsaps had one final opportunity at bat. Reeves and Norse would both reach scoring position, before Tycer would blast a hit right back between the pitcher's legs and up the middle for the winning two-RBI hit.
Game Two: L, 8-1
Perry totaled two hits while
Mackenzie Fleming and Norse were both walked once in game two.
Racing to a 3-0 lead in the first inning, Berry's offense got off to a strong start. They would then push their advantage up to 5-0 following a two-RBI homer.
Millsaps would score their first run of the game in the bottom of the third when Reeves would secure an infield RBI to score
Alli Nolen.
Berry would attach three more runs to their score to make it 8-1 in the fourth inning. Both defenses would go on to produce quality play and neither team would score again as a result.
The Majors are now scheduled to host Berry for the finale of the three-game series on Sunday. First pitch is set for 12 p.m. Live stats and video will be available at gomajors.com.
