Men’s Soccer Blanks Pensacola Christian in 1-0 Rematch Victory

Michael Hamauei Tallied Eight-Save Shutout, Junior Jacks Dowdy Scored in Triumph

JACKSON, Miss. – The Millsaps men's soccer team triumphed over Pensacola Christian College with a 1-0 shutout victory at Harper Davis Field on Saturday night. Freshman goalkeeper Michael Hamauei was flawless posting an eight-save shutout, while junior Jacks Dowdy scored his second goal of the season.

Millsaps (1-3-1) avenged a defeat to Pensacola Christian (1-5) from last season. The Majors were outshot 13-7 on Friday, but only by a narrow 8-6 margin for on-target attempts. Dowdy recorded three shots on goal and junior Mason Boyd added two on-target opportunities.

The Eagles tallied two fewer fouls (12-14), but Millsaps had more corner kick opportunities (5-3) with four in the crucial second half as the clock ticked down.

Dowdy fired the first shot on-target just two minutes in as Millsaps looked ready from the opening whistle. Senior midfielder/defender Kaleb Newton then stole a pass at midfield on a Pensacola Christian throw-in. He drove the ball beautifully up the middle where a sprinting Dowdy corraled it past the defenders and worked his way around the goalkeeper for the tally in the ninth minute.

Dowdy then looked poised for another score four minutes later as he found another breakaway chance, but the Eagle keeper slowed the chance before a shot.

The first half ended relatively quietly with both teams tallying three shots each. However, Hamauei was even more superb in the second half when Pensacola Christian tallied 10 shot attempts.

Hamauei made a highlight-caliber stop six minutes into the second half on a cross attempt. Gliding left to right, Hamauei made a point-blank save across the goal front.

He would go on to make six total saves in the second half, including two in the final six minutes to preserve the victory. The Majors possessed strong structural poise throughout the match to limit few quality chances despite the shot disparity.

Millsaps concludes its four-match homestand by hosting Tougaloo College on Sunday. The match will begin at 5 p.m. with live video and live stats available at gomajors.com.
