Softball Falls in Doubleheader at Huntingdon

Majors Next Travel to Face Centenary, Beginning at 2 p.m. on Tuesday

MONTGOMERY, Ala. – The Millsaps softball team traveled for its first road doubleheader of the season, falling 10-2 and 8-4 at Huntingdon's Lucinda Samford Cannon Softball Field on Tuesday.

Game 1: 10-2, (6 inn.) L

Junior Molli Perry batted 1-for-2 with a walk and scored twice, but it was not enough as Huntingdon found runs in bunches in game one. Classmate Katie Norris and reigning SAA Player of the Week Brianna Newman posted an RBI.

Perry led off the game with a walk and was promptly bunted over to second in scoring position. Norris cashed in with an RBI single to center field to plate the first run of the game moments later.

The Hawks answered with four runs in the second inning, but the Majors scored another run in the top of the third. Perry led off the inning with a single and advanced to second on a fielder's choice. Newman plated home her teammate with a single to third base, cutting the deficit to 4-2.

Huntingdon would add three runs in the fourth and three more in sixth to earn a 10-2 win.

Game 2: 8-4, L

Freshman pitcher Abigail Smith allowed zero runs, one hit and two walks in 1.1 innings of relief. Senior Magen Authement and freshman Julia Strain recorded a pair of hits, while Strain added a run and a two-run home run. The trio's efforts weren't enough as Huntingdon (3-0) stormed past Millsaps (4-2) in game two.

The Hawks got on the board early with two runs in the opening inning. Following a Newman walk, Strain belted a two-run homer to tie the contest in the fourth.

Millsaps built a 4-2 edge in the top of the fifth inning following senior Mackenzie Fleming and Perry walks. The duo would eventually reach scoring position off an Authement single and both be plated home with a Norris single.

Huntingdon would tally the next six runs in the bottom of the fifth to earn an 8-4 advantage. The Hawks held the score for the win.

The Majors will continue its road trip with a 2 p.m. doubleheader at Centenary College on Tuesday, Feb. 21. Live video and stats will be available at gomajors.com.
