INDIANAPOLIS – Millsaps swimming and diving graduate
Bryan Sullivan's hard work paid off as he was selected as a qualifier for the 2023 NCAA Division III Swimming and Diving Championships, the NCAA Division III Men's and Women's Swimming and Diving Committee revealed on Wednesday.
The championships will take place inside the Greensboro Aquatic Center in Greensboro, N.C. March 15-18.
A total of six of Sullivan's times rank in the top 35 nationally for DIII, with three being national qualifying standards (top 16, plus additional events requested to swim). They include the 50-yard freestyle (eighth, 20.05 seconds), 100-yard butterfly (10th, 47.74) and 100-yard breaststroke (23rd, 55.43).
Coincidentally, he will swim each event in that order over a three-day stretch, with preliminary heats slated for 9 a.m. CST each morning and a top-eight finals at 5 p.m. CST each evening. The Jackson, Miss., product will swim the 50 free on Wednesday, March 15, the 100 fly on Thursday and the 100 breast on Friday.
This will be the third time Sullivan has qualified for nationals and twice in two seasons at Millsaps College. He swam in three events at the 2022 NCAA Division II meet. Prior to that, he qualified for the 2019 NCAA Division II Men's Swimming and Diving Championships during his four-season career at Drury University. He was unable to compete because Drury reached a cap for the number of student-athletes able to compete in the meet.
A 2022 CSCAA Scholar All-American, Sullivan was named Southern Athletic Association Men's Swimmer of the Year for the second time on Feb. 11 after claiming two conference titles, a runner-up finish and member of four relays. The performances landed him on the All-SAA First and Second Teams after being named the SAA Men's Swimmer of the Week three times during the season.
So far in Sullivan's illustrious career, the Jackson Prep graduate has set five SAA open records, three SAA meet records, nine individual school records and helped establish four relay school marks.
The men's swimming and diving program, now in its fourth season, tallied three wins during the season. Millsaps won its first meet in program history on Oct. 22, 2022 against Centenary College. The Majors also finished a program-best fifth at the conference meet.
The Old Dominion Athletic Conference and Greensboro Aquatic Center will serve as hosts of the championships. A total of 579 participants (526 swimmers and 53 divers) will compete in the championships.
Student-athletes qualified for the swimming portion of the championships by meeting the established minimum time for the events in which they entered. Divers will be determined by performances achieved at the regional diving meets February 24-25. The complete list of all swimmers competing in the championships is available at www.usaswimming.org/ncaa.
NCAA.com will video stream all sessions Wednesday through Saturday of the championships.
