DANVILLE, Ky. – The Millsaps softball team battled hard in an SAA road doubleheader, but fell 4-3 in extra innings and 5-1 at the Centre College softball field on Saturday.
Game 1: 4-3 (8 inn.), L
Junior
Haylie Hoffpauir tallied an RBI double and scored a run a, while classmate
Katie Norris went 2-3 with a double and drew a walk. Fellow junior
Molli Perry batted 1-2 and garnered two walks and a pair of steals.
Senior
Hannah Derouen pitched 7.2 innings in which she only walked one batter and struck out five against three earned runs.
Going into the doubleheader, Centre opened the scoring in the bottom of the fourth. The Majors looked poised to tie the game immediately in the top of the fifth when Norris doubled to left center with one out. A ground out advanced Norris to third, which was followed by back-to-back walks. Centre held off the threat with an ensuing line out.
Centre later attacked in the bottom of the sixth with an unearned run to push their lead to 2-0. Millsaps would rally back in the top of the seventh to force extra innings. Norris walked, which brought in senior
Mackenzie Fleming to pinch run. Hoffpauir brought Fleming home with a double to left center.
Moments later, junior
Camille Black would ground out, but allow Hoffpauir to score the tying run. Perry and junior
Brianna Newman followed with singles to reach scoring position. Centre ended the opportunity with a fly out.
In top of the eighth, Norris continued to make noise with an RBI single, scoring freshman
Tayler Gonzales from second base. Norris would eventually reach third base, but Centre limited the damage to 3-2.
The Colonels then reached base successfully with two of their first three batters. A triple scored both runners and ended the game, 4-3 in the bottom of the eighth.
Game 2: 5-1, L
Junior
Molly Perry went 2-3, tallied an RBI and stole a base, while Fleming scored once and walked twice in Game Two.
The Majors opened the scoring for a 1-0 advantage in the top of the third. Fleming reached via an error and advanced to third off a sacrifice and passed ball.
Perry would later single home her teammate. Centre answered with a run in the bottom half of the inning.
The Colonels then loaded the bases and pushed a run across to hold a narrow 2-1 edge through five. The lead would grow to 5-1 and the hosts would hold on in the seventh.
