JACKSON, Miss. – The Millsaps softball team conquered Agnes Scott in doubleheader action, 4-1 and 10-2 (five innings) at the Millsaps Softball Complex on Saturday.
Game 1: 4-1, W
Senior
Hannah Derouen pitched a complete seven innings with a career-high nine strikeouts, while giving up just one walk, one run and five hits.
Junior
Molli Perry batted 3-for-4 with a run scored and stolen base. Classmate
Haylie Hoffpauir tallied a hit and two RBIs, while senior
Mackenzie Fleming went 1-for-3 with a run and an RBI.
The Majors jumped on the Scotties for the first run of the game in the bottom of the second inning. Sophomore
Alli Nolen led off with a walk and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt. Fleming then struck with an RBI to right field to open the scoring.
The Majors would add another run on a delayed steal play, with junior
Camille Black stealing second and Fleming reaching home.
Two batters later, Hoffpauir singled up the middle to plate Perry and Black to build a 4-0 advantage.
The Scotties gained ground in the top of the fourth off an error. It was not enough as they struggled to find their rhythm offensively all day.
Both pitchers locked in, allowing no runs the rest of the opening game. Derouen was fantastic and struck out two of the final three batters she faced in a 1-2-3 seventh inning.
Game 2: 10-2 (5 inn.), W
Freshman
Cassidy Cannella genereated an RBI and two runs scored. Hoffpauir finished with an RBI, run scored, two walks and two stolen bases. Nolen posted a hit, walk, two RBIs and scored three times. Both Black and junior
Brianna Newman (3-3, one run) recorded a pair of RBIs.
Senior
Delta Newman pitched the full five innings, while striking out four Scotties against three walks, two hits and two runs.
The Scotties began the game with a run in the top of the first inning over the Majors. The Majors would answer back over the next three innings with 10 runs.
Scoring three in the second, Newman singled home Nolen before Black propelled both Newman and Cannella across the plate.
Millsaps then exploded for five runs in the third frame to extend its lead to 8-1. Nolen got the inning started with a two-RBI single to plate junior
Katie Norris and Hoffpauir.
Newman followed with an RBI single, Black pushed a run across with an error and Hoffpair walked in the eighth tally.
The Majors added two more runs in the fourth courtesy of a Cannella RBI single and senior
Magen Authement fielder's choice RBI.
Agnes Scott added a run in the fifth, but it was too little, too late as Millsaps earned a 10-2, run-rule victory in five innings.
The Majors will next face off against Sewanee in an SAA doubleheader, starting at 12 p.m. on Saturday. Live video and live stats will be available at gomajors.com.
