Softball Takes SAA Home Series over Sewanee

Majors Use Late-Inning Magic to Win Two-of-Three Games, Saturday and Sunday

JACKSON, Miss. – The Millsaps softball team improved to 10-2 at home this season after claiming two-of-three wins over Sewanee during Alumni Weekend. The Majors split with a 4-1 victory and narrow 5-4 defeat on Saturday and returned to earn a 3-1 win at the Millsaps College Softball Complex on Sunday.

During Alumni Weekend, members of both the 2003 and 2013 Millsaps College softball teams returned to campus and were recognized for their conference championship seasons. Senior Delta Claire Newman was also bestowed the Molly Tyner Boland Award for altruism on and off the field.

Game 1: 4-1, W

Senior Hannah Derouen pitched all seven innings while striking out five batters, yielding one run, one walk and five hits in Game One.

Junior Camille Black went 2-for-3 with two RBIs and a double. Classmate Hannah Hoffpauir batted a solid 3-for-4 with a run scored and stolen base.

The Tigers jumped on the scoreboard first in the third inning for a 1-0 advantage. The Majors responded in their half of the third to tie the contest at 1-1.

Hoffpauir led off the inning with a single and advanced to third off a bunt and ground out. Sophomore Alli Nolen scored her teammate on a fly ball that was dropped by the Sewanee left fielder.

Both teams would battle hard in the circle until the sixth inning. Nolen would post a leadoff triple to send a jolt into the offense. Freshman Julia Strain then singled up the middle to give Millsaps its first lead at 2-1.

Senior Magen Authement reached base safely with a single up the middle. Both Strain and Authement were powered home two batters later by Black with a two-run double to left center.

The Tigers would try to make a comeback in the seventh with two runners on, but the Majors were able to hold for a 4-1 win.

Game 2: 5-4, L

Junior Katie Norris finished 3-for-4 with two RBIs in the close loss in Game Two. Both Nolen and Black  (one run) generated two hits each.

Senior Delta Claire Newman pitched four innings, allowing three runs and junior Abigail Smith finished out the final three frames with two runs and two hits against.

The Majors started the game off with a first inning run by junior Molli Perry. She led with a walk, reached third on a Hoffpauir bunt and scored off an error.

Sewanee would then attack in the third inning with a pair of runs. The Tigers added another run in the fourth and scored twice in the seventh to build a 5-1 lead.

Millsaps nearly pulled off a huge comeback with three runs in the bottom of the seventh. Hoffpauir forced a bases-loaded walk, which was followed by a Norris two-RBI single up the middle. Black and Perry scored the third and fourth runs, respectively, but Sewanee held on for a 5-4 decision.

Game 3: 3-1, W

Senior Hannah Derouen pitched another complete seven innings, holding the Tigers to one run and three hits to go along with two strikeouts.

Authement went 2-for-3 with a run scored. Black, Hoffpauir and Strain each contributed RBIs.

The Tigers scored first in the top of the first frame. It was a pitcher's duel from there as the next run occurred in the bottom of the fifth.

Authement led the fifth with single and immediately reached scoring position off a freshman Tayler Gonzales bunt. After a walk and a pop up, Hoffpaur singled to right field to plate Authement and tie the game.

Millsaps would find a late surge in the sixth inning with three of the first four batters reaching with singles. Gonzales would force an error, allowing Norris to score and give the Majors a 2-1 lead.

Black would then fly one out to the Tigers' right fielder and push Strain home for the third run of the contest. Derouen would hold Sewanee to a 1-2-3 inning and give Millsaps a 3-1, series-clinching triumph.

The Majors will next face off against Birmingham-Southern, starting at 12 p.m. on Saturday. Live video and live stats will be available at gomajors.com.
