Track and Field Opens Season at Mississippi College Spring Cleaning Classic

Majors Post Four Marks in Programs’ Top-Five Lists, Sierra Schmidt Sets Pole Vault School Record on Saturday

CLINTON, Miss. – The Millsaps men's and women's track and field programs opened the 2023 spring calendar at the Mississippi College Spring Cleaning Classic on the James E. Parkman Track, Saturday.
 
Freshman Sierra Schmidt set the school record in the pole vault, while three other Majors posted top-five marks in their respective events.
 
Schmidt cleared 3.05 meters (10 feet) in the event to finish second in the meet, which featured 23 schools from NCAA Division I to junior college. She also matched the height of the winner.
 
Classmate Eleanor Scott claimed third in the high jump with a leap of 1.55 meters, which is tied for fourth in school history. Another top-five performance was recorded by sophomore Alexandra Raybourn. She now sits fifth in the program records in the 400 meters (1:03.18, 15th).
 
Several Majors also posted strong performances in multiple disciplines. Sophomore Tyler Hamby ended the day in fourth for the javelin throw (29.90 meters).
 
Senior Clare Howard also finished 17th in the 5000 meters. Sophomore distance competitor Sarah Strickland crossed the line in the top 20 in two events, including the 1500 meters (14th, 5:17.95) and 5000 meters (18th, 20:16.78).
 
On the men's side, senior William Weber placed second in the pole vault and now ranks second in program history with a bound of 4.25 meters.
 
Fellow classmate Christopher Butler had a pair of strong showings as he finished fourth in the long jump (6.71 meters) and 20th with a swift mark of 11.29 seconds.
 
Also finishing in the top 10 was junior Patrick Elliott and freshman Thor Debetaz. Elliott was eighth in the 1500 meters (4:05.65) and Debetaz was ninth in the javelin (44.51 meters). Additionally, senior Landry Lemoine covered 5000 meters in 16:33.67 for 19th place.
 
The Majors will next compete in the Hendrix Alumni Open on Saturday, March 11. The first event is set to begin at 11:30 a.m.
