Softball Splits First Day of SAA Opening Round

Majors Defeated Sewanee, Fell to Berry on Friday

MT. BERRY, Ga. – Millsaps softball handled No. 5 seed Sewanee, 6-5, but fell to No. 1 seed Berry College, 14-0 in the SAA Softball Tournament Opening Round at Kay Williams Softball Field on Friday.

The Majors will need to win twice against Sewanee at 11 a.m. CT and Berry at 1:30 p.m. CT on Saturday to force a decisive Game Five of the Berry Pod on Sunday.

 Game 1 vs. Sewanee: 6-5, W

Junior Molli Perry finished 2-3 with an RBI in the opening victory. Senior Mackenzie Fleming batted 3-4 with a run scored as freshman Julia Strain (2-4) was electric with two RBIs and run.

Senior Hannah Derouen tossed 4.0 innings, tallying four strikeouts against three hits, two walks and one earned run. Classmate Delta Claire Newman closed the game in the seventh without yielding a run.

The Majors opened the second inning with a Perry fielder's choice RBI scoring Fleming. Junior Haylie Hoffpauir would later crack a ball to the right side of the field pushing Millsaps ahead, 2-0.

The Tigers added a run in the third, but Millsaps used a terrific four-run fourth inning to build crucial breathing room.

Sophomore Alli Nolen (2-4) doubled to the plate junior Camille Black and Strain would follow with a double of her own to score Hoffpauir and Nolen. A couple batters later, junior Brianna Newman registered an RBI to bring around Strain and make it a 6-1 contest.

Sewanee answered back with a pair of runs in the fifth and seventh innings. The Tigers put two further runners on first and second base, but a pop fly in foul territory and a Fleming line-drive catch secured a 6-5 victory.

Game 2 at Berry: 14-0, (5 inn.), L

Strain and Fleming both walked, but the No. 2 nationally ranked Berry Vikings were too tough on Friday.

Berry scored three runs in the first and four tallies in the second. The Vikings added seven runs in the fourth to put the run-rule in play as the fifth inning concluded.

Millsaps will next face Sewanee in an elimination game, starting at 11 a.m. on Saturday. Live video and live stats will be available at gomajors.com.
