Track and Field Sets Four Program Marks, Places Six on All-SAA Team

Women’s Team Ties Highest-Ever Finish at SAA Championships on Saturday

DANVILLE, Ky. – It was a record-shattering meet for the Millsaps men's and women's track and field programs as the Majors topped four program marks and placed six on the All-SAA Track & Field Team following the 2023 SAA Track & Field Championships on Saturday.

The two-day competition, hosted by Centre College inside Andy Frye Stadium at Joe McDaniel Field, also saw the Millsaps women tie their highest-ever meet finish. Additionally, senior Christopher Butler claimed his second SAA long jump crown.

On the men's side, sophomore Dez'Tavien Frank set both the 200-meter (22.29 seconds) and 400-meter (49.52) marks, while junior Patrick Elliott bettered his own mark at 800 meters (1:58.35). Sophomore Natalie Burke etched her name atop the women's triple jump rankings with a bound of 10.76 meters.

Butler secured a spot on the All-First Team and five Majors made the All-SAA Third Team with third-place performances. They included Burke (women's triple jump), Frank (men's 400m), freshman Eleanor Scott (women's high jump), freshman Sierra Schmidt (women's pole vault) and senior William Weber (men's pole vault).

The women's program finished fourth with 52 points matching the team's highest-finish from 2013, while the men ended sixth with 45 points.

On Friday, Butler leapt 6.93 meters to victory in the long jump. Frank advanced to the finals with identical third-place showings in the 200 meters (22.29) and 400 meters (50.10). Butler also secured a spot in the 100-meter Finals with a sixth-place effort in 11.08 seconds.

Burke was the lone Millsaps female student-athlete to earn finals placement after running eighth in the 100 meters (13.02) and 200 meters (26.92). The Vicksburg, Miss., product also measured 5.13 meters in the long jump, garnering fourth position.

The squad performed well in Friday's field and distance finals. Schmidt cleared the pole vault at 3.03 meters to place third, while graduate Rose Ward recorded a seventh-place showing in the hammer throw at 39.70 meters.

The women's 10-kilometer run saw senior Clare Howard garner the third-fastest time in school history (42:28.44, sixth). Sophomore Fran Edwards also ran the sixth-quickest time in the event (44:17.97, 10th).

Additionally, senior Khloe Colar now sits fifth in program history after covering the 400-meter hurdles in 1:17.03 for 11th.

On Saturday, four Majors ended the meet in third in their respective events to make the All-SAA Team. Scott cleared the high jump in 1.53 meters, Weber tossed the javelin 49.21 meters, while Burke set the program record in the triple jump (10.76 meters) and Frank sizzled to a record-setting 400-meter mark (49.52).

Burke and Frank also finished fifth in the 200-meter Final with times of 26.74 and 22.76, respectively. Burke also finished seventh in the 100-meter Final (12.99), while Butler placed fourth (11.14) on the men's side.

Elliott performed well in the mid-distance events with his school record in the 800 meters (1.58.35, fifth) and second point-scoring effort in the 1500 meters (4:06.14, sixth).

Also notable was Howard securing ninth-place by running the fifth-swiftest Millsaps 5K of all time (19:44.24).

Other individual point scorers were Scott in the women's triple jump (10.35 meters, sixth), sophomore Sarah Strickland in the women's 1500 meters (5:09.63, sixth), sophomore Tyler Hamby in the women's javelin (30.97 meters, sixth), graduate Bryan Sullivan in the men's javelin (40.45 meters, seventh) and sophomore Patch Heard in the men's 800 meters (1:59.70, seventh). Heard became the third-best in the Millsaps record book for the event.

The Majors posted two season-best times in four of the relays. Heard, Elliott, freshman Chase Spring and Frank combined for a time of 3:31.30 (sixth) in the 4x400. Freshman Ashanti Lastrapes, Burke, graduate Onxy Magno and sophomore Ranee' LeVasseur recorded a mark of 52.67 (fourth) in the 4x100.
