ATLANTA – The Millsaps softball program received postseason honors as five talented student-athletes were named to the 2023 All-Southern Athletic Association Softball Team, the league office announced on Monday.
Molli Perry garnered All-SAA First Team status as an At-Large selection,
Katie Norris made the Second Team (Outfield), while
Hannah Derouen,
Mackenzie Fleming and
Julia Strain received Honorable Mention plaudits.
Perry, a native of Kaplan, La. was impressive during her junior campaign after being tabbed the 2022 SAA Player of the Year. The center fielder, who is one of three Majors to start all 38 games, led the league with 22 walks, currently ranks second with 23 stolen bases, ranks sixth in runs scored with 30 and is seventh with a .439 on-base percentage. Having previously been named to the 2021 SAA Second Team and 2022 SAA First Team, Perry paced the Majors with 36 hits and two home runs to go along with a .330 batting average.
Norris, a junior from Hoover, Ala., appeared in 36 games with 34 starts. During her junior season, she led the team with a .333 batting average, .452 slugging percentage, nine doubles and 18 RBIs. Norris was second with 18 runs scored, 31 hits and six stolen bases. The right fielder currently ranks fifth in the SAA with 14 walks and was selected to the 2022 SAA Honorable Mention Team.
Derouen made 24 appearances, started 17 times and pitched a team-best nine complete games. The Lake Charles, La., product and Carla D. Webb Award recipient as the top Millsaps senior female student-athlete, ranks third in the SAA in innings pitched (111.2 IP), fourth in strikeouts (73), fifth in ERA (3.76), sixth in wins (seven) and both seventh in opposing batting average (.309) and strikeouts looking (18). She was also a 2021 All-Honorable Mention pitcher.
Fleming, a product of Long Beach, Miss., and 2023 Millsaps College Archie Lamb Award recipient, appeared in 31 contests. She sits third in the conference with two triples and fifth with 14 walks. Fleming added 17 hits, 12 runs, 14 walks and a .239 batting average at second base.
Strain, a rising freshman from Baton Rouge, La. finished the 2023 season well with the team's second-highest slugging percentage (.423). Contributing down the stretch in 26 games played and 18 starts, Strain totaled 13 hits, 10 RBIs, nine runs, eight walks, four doubles and homered against Huntingdon on Feb. 14. She spent the majority of her time at first base.
