MOBILE, Ala. – Competing in temperatures in the low 90s, the Millsaps women's soccer team kicked off its 2023 calendar inside The Jungle at the University of Mobile on Tuesday. The Rams bested the Majors, 4-0 in an exhibition contest.
Sophomore goalkeeper
Emily Lozano and junior goalie
Isabella Locke combined for 15 saves. Lozano recorded 64 minutes and eight saves, while Locke completed the match with seven stops.
The Rams recorded the first chance of the match with a shot off the post a minute in, but would later score in the fifth minute of action.
Only 30 seconds later the Majors countered with a graduate
Mary Ranager shot of the woodwork in an attempt to battle back. A minute later, however, the Rams would create another chance, but Lozano kept it 1-0.
The Rams then forced a turnover in the 15th minute and nearly grew their lead, but Lozano used an outstretched grab to thwart the chance.
Millsaps would look for the equalizer moments after with a header off a corner kick, but the ball bounced just to the left side in front of the net.
Mobile continued to threaten with chances and sent a close shot over the crossbar 25 minutes into the first half.
After a few nifty short passes, freshman
Mollie Spradley would fire an attempt from distance in the 31st minute.
The Rams produced another pair of chances that both sailed off the crossbar with just over 10 minutes and four minutes to play, respectively before intermission.
The pressure resulted in a 2-0 advantage prior to intermission when a rebound bounced free and was slid home in the lower-right post. Lozano made four saves after facing six first-half shots.
Fifth year
Riley Ely registered a shot on net in the 62nd minute as the Majors attempted to get on the scoreboard. Mobile tried to put the game out of reach, but Lozano made another solid stop and a kick save off a rebound.
Locke would see action in the 65th minute, directly after the exciting chance was pushed aside by Lozano.
In the 68th minute the Rams would cut through defenders and make it 3-0. Additionally in the 77th minute, a series of passes down the sideline led to a final pass in the middle, which was netted into the back of the net.
