Football Falls in SAA Opener at Sewanee, 27-21 on Saturday

Rising Freshman Gray Jennings Throws for 345 Yards, Scores Three Times

SEWANEE, Tenn. – The Millsaps football team lost a thrilling SAA road matchup, 27-21 to Sewanee at Harris Stadium on Saturday.

It was a clash of two offensive styles with Majors outpassing the Tigers, 345-58 yards. Sewanee finished with a 359-40 yard advantage on the ground. However, both teams recorded a pair of rushing scores.

Freshman quarterback Gray Jennings passed for 345 yards (22-of-45), threw for a score and added two rushing touchdowns. Senior Temias Mason hauled in eight receptions for a career-high 139 yards and a touchdown.

Sophomore Joshua Richardson rushed for 48 yards, while classmate Nehemiah Coalson led with eight tackles (2.0 TFLs).

Millsaps reached the Sewanee 25-yard line on its second drive, but was unable to convert on any early fourth down. The Majors would then march down inside the 15-yard line but an interception stalled the opportunity in the second quarter.

Sewanee scored the game's first points with a touchdown on the next possession midway through the second.

The Majors responded with a score before halftime after beginning a drive with two minutes on the clock at midfield. Jennings rushed from five yards out to knot the game at 7-7. Freshman EJ Escarfullet would add his first of three PATs.

The Tigers would answer with scores on their first two possessions of the second half with an 18-yard pass and 58-yard rush.

Undaunted, Millsaps answered right back with a 30-yard touchdown connection to Mason, cutting the deficit to 21-14 midway through the third quarter. Both defenses would firm up and the score would remain the same with 15 minutes to play.

Sewanee looked to add to its lead, but missed an 18-yard attempt opening the fourth quarter. The lead would grow to 27-14 when the Tigers rushed from seven yards out with 9:30 remaining.

Needing an answer again, the Majors covered 65 yards after a huge fourth-down conversion. Jennings found freshman Willie Elliott on 4th-and-16 at the Sewanee 28-yard line and picked up 24 yards. A few plays later, Jennings carried the ball in from one yard out to make it a 27-21 game.

The Tigers would go for it on fourth down and be stopped at the Millsaps 16-yard line. The Majors would have the ball back with 1:31 on the clock.

Jennings would tally three consecutive completions to drive the Majors down to the Sewanee 23-yard line, forcing the Tigers to call a timeout with 49 seconds to go.

However, Millsaps would be unable to connect on the next three plays. A sack would end the opportunity and allow the Tigers to escape with the win.
