JACKSON, Miss. – Millsaps volleyball head
Jaime Fisher collected her 250th career victory as the Majors took down Tougaloo College, 25-17, 25-20, 20 inside the Hangar Dome on Tuesday night.
The Majors improved to 15-3 on the season as Coach Fisher eclipsed the 250-career win total in her 17th season as Millsaps head coach. She now holds 110 more victories than the next coach in program history.
Senior setter
Zoe Elder recorded her 11th double-double of the season with 22 assists, 10 digs and five kills. It was also her third consecutive match with a double-double.
Junior
Ally Baer recorded nine kills and three aces, while sophomore
Sandy Bourgeois secured 10 digs. On the attack, junior
Mallory Richardson added seven kills and freshman
Lily Bumpers recorded five kills.
The teams exchanged the lead four times with Tougaloo out front, 6-5 in the opening set. Millsaps found its footing shortly after with a 9-1 run to gain control.
The Bulldogs barked back and cut the deficit to 15-10 before Richardson, Baer and Elder answered with back-to-back-to-back kills. Tougaloo kept the set close and later trailed, 20-16.
However, three straight errors, a Bear and Capezzera kill helped the Majors claim the set, 25-17.
Tougaloo started set two strong and opened with a 7-4 edge. The Majors though recovered to take a 16-10 lead after a 12-3 rally.
The visitors continued to show resilience and pulled within three points late multiple times, including at 23-20. An attack error and Baer service ace was enough to seal the set for Millsaps.
The Majors jumped ahead, 9-4 in the third set before the Bulldogs clawed back within one point. Tougaloo eventually claimed a 13-11 advantage following a 4-0 burst.
All tied at 16-16, Millsaps retaliated and found their groove with a Richardson and sophomore
Amelia Bohl kill as well as two Bulldog errors to hold a 20-16 advantage. A service error made it a 22-19 contest, but freshman
Zoe LaCaze, Baer and Bumpers all contributed kills down the stretch to close out the set and the match, 25-20.
After the match, Millsaps surprised Coach Fisher with golden balloons adding 2-5-0 together and sweet treats in honor of the career milestone.
