MEMPHIS, Tenn. – The Millsaps softball team (6-9, 1-1 SAA) began the weekend with a Southern Athletic Association opening doubleheader split against Rhodes (11-13-1, 4-1 SAA) at the Rhodes Softball Field on Saturday. The Lynx claimed Game One, 4-3 in eight innings and the Majors replied with a 3-2 decision in Game Two.
Game 1: 4-3 (8 Innings), L
Sophomore
Kinsey Smith batted 3-for-4 with a run scored and added 2 RBIs, while senior
Molli Perry finished 2-for-4 at the plate with an RBI. Freshman
Allana Vasquez posted an RBI double against the Lynx in Game One.
Classmate
Mya Skinner tossed 7.1 innings in the circle for the Majors while striking out three batters and only allowing two earned runs. The Lynx tallied seven hit and eight walks, but Millsaps eliminated multiple threats on the base path.
A Vasquez double to left field would put the Majors ahead 1-0 in the bottom of the first inning and send Smith home.
In the top of the third inning, the Millsaps lead would grow 2-0 as Smith used a single of her own to push Perry home with an RBI.
The top of the fifth inning saw Millsaps create a 3-0 margin when Smith singled around freshman
Kadence Cannon from second.
Rhodes came alive in the bottom of the six for three runs and tie up the contest. A trio of singles opened the inning an provided the momentum the hosts would need.
Millsaps looked poised to regain the lead after loading the bases with one out in the seventh. Rhodes used back-to-back strikeouts to close the opportunity.
The Lynx however would score the winning run in the bottom of the eighth after putting two runners in scoring position with one out. An RBI double gave Rhodes a 4-3 win in extras to finalize Game One.
Game 2: 3-2, W
Vasquez was terrific in the circle and at the dish in an impressive Game Two response. The Udine, Italy, product tossed a complete seven innings with two earned runs, two walks, two strikeouts against eight hits. She also tallied her second collegiate home run with two RBIs, a run scored and pair of hits.
Perry finished 2-for-4 with one run scored in the victory over Rhodes.
The Majors did all their offensive damage with three runs in the top of the third inning. Millsaps would take a 1-0 lead as a Smith single plated Perry from second.
Moments later, the Majors' lead would reach 3-0 as Vasquez used a two-run homer to bring Smith and herself around the bases.
In the same inning, Rhodes would answer back with a run. The Lynx would score again in the bottom of the fourth to make the score, 3-2.
Millsaps would keep Rhodes off the scoreboard the rest of the way. The Lynx doubled with two outs in the bottom of the seventh, but freshman
Kadence Cannon would catch a pop up for the final out and secure the 3-2 victory.
