Patrick Elliott Betters Steeplechase School Record, Five Majors Advance to Finals on Friday

CONWAY, Ark. – The Millsaps men's and women's track and field programs began Day One of the 2024 Southern Athletic Association Outdoor Track and Field Championship in strong fashion at Young-Wise Memorial Stadium on Friday.

Senior Patrick Elliott claimed All-SAA Honorable Mention recognition and bettered his own school record in the 3000-meter steeplechase final, while five Majors advanced to Saturday's finals. The Millsaps men ranked with five points and the women currently sit sixth with four points.

Elliott placed third in a fast-paced race, clocking a time of 9 minutes, 34.09 seconds. The time bettered his own program top time by over four seconds. Berry's Ben Hanlon was just ahead on Friday with an SAA meet-record time of 9:29.93.

Junior Dez'Tavien Frank cruised in the 200- and 400-meter prelims with identical fourth-place performances. He finished the 200 in 22.25 and 400 in 51.15. The top eight runners in each event secured a spot in the finals.

Freshman Jeremiah Hall placed well in his SAA Championship debut, securing fourth in the long jump final (6.45 meters) and 10th in the 100-meter prelims (11.18 seconds).

On the women's side, sophomore Ashanti Lastrapes (100 and 200 meters) and junior Natalie Burke (100 meters) both advanced to the final heat set held on Day Two.

Lastrapes covered the 100 meters in 12.64 (seventh) ahead of Burke (12.84 seconds, 10th) and freshman Fiona Selders (12.85 seconds, 11th).

Burke was the top Major in the 200 meters (26.86 seconds, seventh) just in front of Lastrapes (26.86 seconds, eighth) and Selders (27.27, 10th).

Junior Fran Edwards put down an impressive time 43:09.88 in the 10,000 meters to end the day in 12th place.

Burke and sophomore Sierra Schmidt excelled in the field events. Burke competed in the long jump (4.98 meters, 10th) and Schmidt scored in the pole vault (2.85 meters, fifth).
