SEWANEE, Tenn. – The Millsaps softball team (8-18, 3-8 SAA) fought tooth and nail, but fell in a pair of narrow defeats at Sewanee (8-25, 4-7 SAA) on Saturday. The Majors were stopped 5-3 in Game One and 11-10 in 11 innings at Montgomery Field.
Game 1: 5-3, L
Freshman
Allana Vasquez pitched all six innings defensively, holding the Tigers to three earned runs and one walk in Game One. Sewanee was struck out twice and fired off 10 hits.
The Majors tallied seven hits, which was led by senior
Molli Perry (3-for-4, one RBI, one steal). Classmate
Katie Norris had a strong game with a double, two runs and a walk.
Sewanee grabbed an early 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first with three opening hits and a sacrifice bunt. A couple batters later an RBI ground out made it a 2-0 start.
The Tigers added to their advantage in the third with a leadoff single, which was followed by an RBI double. A strikeout and ensuing RBI single made it 4-0 through three frames.
Norris began the fourth with a double and Perry followed with a single to begin a comeback attempt. A trio of batters later saw senior
Camille Black plate Norris with a single through the right side.
Millsaps made it a 4-3 deficit in the top of the fifth when Perry singled home freshman

Kadence Cannon forced a based-loaded walk to send home Norris.
A single, sacrifice bunt and fielding error gave Sewanee their fifth run in the bottom of the sixth. Perry then singled with one out in the top of the seventh attempting to complete the comeback. However, a pair of fly outs gave Sewanee a 5-3 win in Game One.
Game 2: 11-10 (11 inn.), L
The Majors fell on the wrong side of a thrilling extra-innings battle in the rematch. Senior
Brianna Newman was solid in 5.1 innings of relief, holding the Tigers to zero earned runs and no walks. Sewanee clawed four hits and was struck out once against Newman.
Vasquez was superb in the box, going 3-for-6 with a career-best seven RBIs, a home run, two doubles and two runs scored.
Norris finished 2-for-5 with three runs scored, an RBI, doubled and walked. Sophomore
Julia Strain singled and walked twice as well.
Millsaps opened with a 2-0 cushion after Norris doubled and Vasquez homered to left field moments later.
Sewanee responded with six runs in the third on four hits, three walks and two errors. However, Millsaps quickly tied the game up at 6-6 with four runs in the top of the fourth. Norris singled home Black from third and Vasquez cleared the loaded bases with a three-RBI double to left center.
The Tigers regained a narrow 7-6 advantage with a bases-loaded sacrifice fly in the bottom of the fourth. A double, single and fielding error then made it 9-6 after five innings of action.
Looking for another resurgence, Norris walked and Perry reached on an error in the sixth. Vasquez promptly followed with an RBI double to left center to make it 9-8. Sophomore
Tayler Gonzales later reached on a separate error, allowing Vasquez to race home and even the contest at 9-9.
Both teams would threaten, but be held scoreless until the 10th inning when runners were placed on second with no outs. Perry singled home Newman from second and the Tigers answered with a sacrifice bunt and RBI double to send the game to the 11th.
Vasquez reached third on a sacrifice bunt but was kept from scoring with an ensuing fly out and ground out. Sewanee ended the game with a single up the middle for the 11-10, walk-off decision.
