SEWANEE, Tenn. – The Millsaps softball team (9-18, 4-8 SAA) was able to get the job done in Game Three of the SAA series by stopping Sewanee (8-26, 4-8 SAA) in eight innings, 3-2 on Sunday at the Tigers Softball Field.
Freshman
Kadence Cannon finished 3-for-4 at bat with a run scored. Classmate
Allana Vasquez posted a 2-for-4 outing with a walk, double, run scored and tallied her fourth homer of the season.
Senior
Abigail Smith tossed all eight innings, while giving up no earned runs, striking out three batters with no walks and eight hits against.
The Majors opened the scoring in the top of the fourth inning with a single by senior
Haylie Hoffpauir to bring Cannon home from third.
In the top of the sixth, Millsaps would grow its lead to 2-0 as Nolen opened the inning with a double to left center. Moments later senior
Katie Norris doubled to the right field and sent Hoffpauir home with an RBI.
The bottom of the sixth saw the Tigers catch back up at 2-2 following a bases-loaded fielder's choice and throwing error.
Millsaps would open the seventh inning strong with sophomore
Kinsey Smith, senior
Camille Black and Cannon loading the bases with no outs. Sewanee would survive with three consecutive strikeouts.
The Tigers would try and put the game to rest in the bottom of the seventh, but a pop out and ground out with a runner on second would send the game into extra innings.
In the eighth inning, Vasquez homered over the center field wall with two outs to give Millsaps a 3-2 advantage. Smith then forced two ground outs and caught a liner to secure the final out and an extra-inning win.
