ATLANTA – For the second consecutive week, a Millsaps softball pitcher has been recognized by the Southern Athletic Association as the SAA Softball Pitcher of the Week. Senior
Abigail Smith received the honor after a conference coaches' vote and league press release on Monday.
Smith was stellar with a complete eight innings pitched in a 3-2 win at Sewanee on Sunday. She allowed zero earned runs, no walks with three strikeouts and eight hits against in the extra-inning contest.
The Florence, Miss., product returned to the circle for the first time since March 17 and made an instant impact as the Majors secured the valuable road win.
Smith, now in her second season after transferring from Meridian Community College, lowered her ERA to 3.45. In eight appearances this season, Smith has struck out 10 batters and held opponents to five walks in 24.1 innings pitched.
She becomes the fourth Millsaps softball recipient to be selected an SAA Softball Athlete of the Week in 2024, joining junior
Alli Nolen (SAA Player of the Week, Feb. 12) and freshman
Allana Vasquez (two-time SAA Pitcher of the Week, Feb. 12 and April 1).
The Majors are next scheduled to host MUW on Wednesday at 4 and 6 p.m., weather permitting. Live video and live stats will be provided at gomajors.com.
