JACKSON, Miss. — Millsaps secured a 34-20 victory over Sewanee during Senior Day at Harper Davis Field on Saturday. The Majors' ground game proved decisive, amassing 240 rushing yards and three touchdowns.
The Majors improved to 6-4 overall and 4-3 in Southern Athletic Association play following the victory. It is the most wins overall and conference wins by the team since the 2013 season (9-1, 5-1 SAA). The Tigers fell to 3-7 on the season and 1-6 in conference competition.
Millsaps' defense was effective, recording two interceptions and four sacks, hindering Sewanee's offensive progress. The Majors honored 15 members of the football team, two cheerleaders and two students on the sports medicine staff prior to kickoff.
Freshman quarter
Grant Bizjack completed 15 of 23 passes for 194 yards and a touchdown, adding a career-best 161 rushing yards on 17 carries.
Junior
Tameron Patterson scored twice on the ground, totaling 10 carries for 43 yards. Sophomore
Greg Donaldson hauled in three receptions for 80 yards. Freshman wideout
Derrick Tasby Jr. totaled four receptions for 33 yards and a touchdown as well.
Defensively, junior
Nate Johnson led the defense with seven tackles, one sack, an interception and a forced fumble. Redshirt sophomore
Brewer Bailey added seven tackles (0.5 TFL) and forced a fumble.
Senior
Zabian Boutan finished with two sacks, two quarterback hurries and five total tackles. Freshman
Jimetrius Akins grabbed an interception of his own.
In special teams, sophomore
Connor Babin was perfect converting two field goals and all four extra-point attempts. He added seven kickoffs that traveled 423 yards (60.4-yard average).
The Majors forced a Sewanee fumble with 6:15 remaining in the opening quarter. However, the quarter finished scoreless as both teams traded interceptions.
Millsaps opened the second quarter with a 26-yard field goal by Babin, giving them an early lead.
After Sewanee responded with a touchdown and failed a two-point conversion attempt, Bizjack rushed 69 yards to set up a Garmon 3-yard touchdown run, reclaiming the lead for the Majors.
The Tigers managed to score again, but Millsaps tied the game at 13-13 with another Babin field goal from 28 yards late in the quarter. The first half ended in a 13-13 tie as neither team scored in the remaining minutes.
The Majors gained momentum in the third quarter with an efficient drive that lasted over nine minutes, culminating in a 3-yard touchdown run by Patterson at 5:08. Bizjack played a pivotal role, completing several short passes and contributing critical rushing yards to sustain the drive. Babin's successful extra point extended Millsaps' lead to 20-13. The quarter concluded with Millsaps maintaining the same advantage.
In the fourth quarter, the Majors used another long drive traveling 92 yards to push ahead, 27-13. The drive culminated with a 9-yard touchdown pass in the middle of the end zone to Tasby Jr.
Sewanee scored another touchdown to make it a 7-point game, but Patterson sealed the game with a 33-yard touchdown run, increasing Millsaps' advantage with just over three minutes remaining.
An interception by Johnson, who returned it 20 yards, sealed the victory with 2:09 to play. The Majors maintained control, concluding with a 34-20 victory as the clock expired in the season finale.
