BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Millsaps men's and women's track and field programs opened up their indoor seasons in record-breaking fashion at the Samford Bulldog Invite inside the Birmingham CrossPlex on Saturday.
Seniors
Fran Edwards and
Sarah Strickland set the women's 5000-meter and mile records, respectively.
Edwards covered the 5,000 meters in 19 minutes, 20.83 seconds to win the event. She shattered the previous mark of 20:46.16, which stood since 2014.
Strickland eclipsed the mile record with a fifth-place time of 5:31.65. The previous top time of 5:48.97 was set in 2015. Strickland also finished ninth in the 800 meters in 2:33.13. Her time now stands third quickest in Millsaps indoor track and field history.
On the men's side, freshman
W.H Carver was 51st in the 60-meter dash (7.82) and 59th in the 200-meter dash (25.31).
Classmate
Justin Smith was 44th (24.12) in the same 200-meter event. Sophomore
Carter Davis also tossed the shot put 8.14 meters to claim 27th.
The Majors will next compete in 2025 SAA Men's and Women's Indoor Track and Field Championships, Feb. 28 and March 1. The meet will be hosted by Centre College in Danville, Ky., with live video and live stats available at gomajors.com.
