CLINTON, Miss. – The Millsaps men's and women's track and field programs started their outdoor-season off strong. The Majors set four personal bests at the James E. Parkman Track on Saturday.
On the women's side, senior Sarah Strickland led the way for the Majors by finishing fourth in the women's 1500-meters by clocking a time of 5 minutes, 9.01 seconds.
The Spanish Fort, Ala., native also finished eighth in the women's 800 meters, where she ran a 2:32.88.
Freshman Claudia Dempsey finished strong behind Strickland in the women's 1500-meters. Dempsey placed eighth (5:42.13), while setting a personal best. She was also 14th in the 800 meters (2:42.54).
Senior Tyler Hamby (second, 31.43 meters) and freshman Laken Day (seventh, 25.34m) each excelled in the javelin event.
Sophomore Amari Jackson-Wright saw her collegiate debut where she placed eighth in the women's shot put (8.96 meters). She also had a strong performance in the women's discus (30.27m), finishing 15th out of 27 other competitors.
Sophomore Amelia Bohl (11th, 28.75m) and Hamby (13th, 21.02m) both set personal bests in the women's hammer event. Bohl secured the 16th spot in the women's discus as well (29.85m).
Sophomore Fiona Selders was swift in the 200 meters (13th, 27.44), while sophomore Hannah Brown, (15th, 13.50) ran a quick 100-meter time.
On the men's side, graduate Bryan Sullivan stood fourth in the men's javelin throw (40.42m).
Freshman William Sullivan, Bryan's sibling, covered 5000 meters in 16:55.33 to claimed 24th place.
Classmate Dillan Duley finished 17th in the men's shot put (10.34m) and 19th in the men's discus (26.16m) for his collegiate debut.
Senior Patch Heard also set a personal best in the men's 1500 meters (16th, 4:31.76), while freshman Phillip Antis held the 23rd spot in the men's 400 meters (53.53).
Sophomore Justin Smith had a solid performance in both the men's 200-meter dash (34th, 23.73) and the men's 100meter dash (40th, 11.91), where he gave his all. Senior AJ Alvarez impressed with a swing of 28.75 meters in the men's hammer throw, claiming 16th.
The Majors will next compete at the Rhodes Invitational in Memphis, March 14-15.
