SEWANEE, Tenn. – The Millsaps College men's and women's track and field programs were strong in Day One of the 2025 Southern Athletic Association Outdoor Track and Field Championships inside Harris Stadium on Friday.
Seniors
Fran Edwards and
Sarah Strickland along with freshman
Claudia Dempsey and sophomore
Fiona Selders improved upon their times in the program record book, while Selders (200 and 400 meters) and two other student-athletes also advanced to Saturday's Finals.
Edwards shattered her own record in the 10,000 meters by over a minute, with a blistering time of 39 minutes, 52.35 seconds to place fifth.
Strickland became the second-swiftest runner in the 3000-meter steeplechase for Millsaps. She cruised to fifth place in 12:23.53, bettering her time by 13 seconds from the 2022 league meet.
Dempsey was excellent in the same steeplechase, placing ninth in 12:55.19. She is now the fourth-quickest in Millsaps history.
Additionally, Selders advanced to a pair of Finals after crossing the line in sixth in the 400 meters (59.66) as well as seventh in the 200 meters (26.47). Her 400-meter mark stands as the third-best individual time in the Major record book.
Sophomore
Hannah Brown also advanced to a Saturday Final after posting a season-best time of 12.85 in the 100-meter dash. Her standard ranked eighth in Friday's Prelim.
Both freshmen
Suzanna Busbee and
Molly Northam secured 10th-place showings in their respective events. Busbee covered 400 meters in 1:03.52, while Northam threw the javelin 27.14 meters.
On the men's side, sophomore
Justin Smith advanced with an eighth-place performance in the 400 meters. Smith covered the lap in 52.21 seconds.
Also securing a top-10 showing was graduate
Bryan Sullivan. The Jackson, Miss., product threw his javelin 38.38 meters to conclude his collegiate career in 10th position.
