COLUMBUS, Miss. — The Millsaps softball team secured a pair of victories over the MUW, winning 5-2 and 7-3 on Saturday at The Don Usher Softball Field, improving their overall record to 9-2 and extending their winning streak to seven games.
Game 1: Millsap 5, MUW 2
In the first game, Millsaps topped the Owls with a 5-2 victory, securing the game with a decisive four-run seventh inning.
Sophomore Hailey Marange pitched 6.0 innings, allowing two earned runs while facing 25 batters.
The Madisonville, La., product-maintained control with a groundout-to-flyout ratio of 9 to 6 and issued only one walk.
Junior Julie Amacher provided relief in the final inning, pitching a scoreless frame and striking out one batter.
Classmate Allana Vasquez had a standout performance, finishing with three hits, including a double, and driving in three runs.
Sophomore Caroline Mathis contributed offensively with two hits and defensively by throwing out a baserunner attempting to steal.
Second-year Hailey Peterson showcased her defensive skills, recording five assists from the shortstop position.
The visiting team capitalized on the Owls' two errors while Millsaps' pitching staff limited them to just two runs over seven innings.
Millsaps broke the scoreless tie in the fourth inning when sophomore Brynn Arena walked and advanced to third on a single by Vasquez and a throwing error.
Freshman Liza Gregg then hit a sacrifice fly, allowing Arena to score the unearned run, giving Millsaps a 1-0 lead. However, in the sixth inning,
The Owls took the lead with two runs, loading the bases and bringing in runs with singles leading ahead 2-1.
Millsaps responded decisively in the seventh inning. After a single by sophomore Kirsten Gilchrist and hits by Mathis and Junior Ella Morgan Sears loaded the bases, Vasquez doubled down the left field line, driving in three runs.
Peterson reached on a fielding error, allowing Vasquez to score an unearned run, sealing a four-run inning for Millsaps to take down the Owls 5-2.
Game 2: Millsaps 7, MUW 3
Vasquez delivered an impressive pitching performance, going 5.0 innings without allowing an earned run, facing 19 batters to win the battle over the Owls.
Mathis scored twice and recorded four assists from her position at third base. Sears contributed with one hit, driving in two runs and adding a double.
Arena added two doubles and one RBI, finishing with two hits in the game.
In the second inning Millsaps scored five of its seven runs in the first two innings.
The team collected 12 hits, including five doubles, and capitalized on four MUW errors to maintain control throughout the game.
The scoring began with Millsaps taking advantage of defensive errors, Mathis reached on a throwing error, and Sears followed, scoring Mathis and reaching second on another error.
Arena doubled, and Vasquez singled, setting up Peterson's two-RBI double, bringing the early lead to 3-0 after the first inning.
Millsaps continued to build their lead in the second inning, as sophomore Ava Palumbo and Mathis reached base, and Sears delivered a two-RBI double.
Arena then doubled to drive in another run, making it 5-0 by the end of the second. The scoring continued in the fourth when Sears scored on a double by Vasquez, pushing the score to 6-0.
In the fifth inning, junior Kadence Cannon walked, stole second, and scored on a single by Palumbo, increasing Millsaps' lead to 7-0.
MUW responded in the sixth inning, scoring three runs on a series of hits and an error, but Millsaps maintained control, ending the game with a 7-3 victory.
