CLINTON, Miss. — The Millsaps men's and women's track and field programs opened their outdoor season responding well in the Mississippi College Spring Classic by boasting five program records on Saturday at the James E. Parkman Track.
On the men's side, freshman Sean Wyers opened his first collegiate outdoor campaign at the Mississippi Spring Cleaning Classic, where he bested top finishes in each event he took part in on Saturday.
Wyers dominated the men's hammer-throwing event, setting the tone and cruising past other throwing specialists to record first place with a 33.64-meter toss in his outdoor season debut.
Following close behind Wyers in the same event, freshmen Michael Cosgriff (4th, 27.84 m) and Jacari Watson (5th, 26.58 m) saw their first outdoor appearances in the men's hammer event, representing the Majors well and making a great impression for themselves.
Wyers performances became even better throughout the day, In the Mississippi Spring Classic. The Eldridge, Ala., native placed eighth in the discus with a throw of 40.64 meters, which is now the second-best mark in the Millsaps program's history.
Wyers concluded his outdoor debut in Clinton, Mississippi, by finishing ninth in the men's shot put with a throw of 12.70 meters, which also secured him the third spot in the program's record book, Huge congratulations to Wyers.
Coming off a strong performance during the indoor season, freshman Dallas Stricker made it known he was ready to compete at the highest level on Saturday in a nearby meet over the weekend.
He finished fifth in the men's 1500 meters with a time of 4:13.67.
Climbing the rankings in the school program's record book, freshman Frederick Fluker Jr.., sits third in the men's 110 hurdles with an 11th-place finish of 16.23 seconds at his first outdoor meet looking to have great career with the Majors.
Not afraid of competition, sophomore Aidan Brice and freshmen Nick Price and Wyatt Wheeler, alongside Fluker Jr., achieved seventh place in the men's 4x100 relay at the Mississippi Spring Classic, finishing their time in 44.87 seconds.
Having a solid day on the track, sophomore Phillip Antis finished 29th in the men's 400 meters. Majors can expect great expectations coming from Antis this season as he looks to continue leading the team as a young veteran.
Completing the men's accomplishments on Saturday, classmate Dillon Duley proved he could be one of the strongest competitors for the Majors.
He finished 12th in the men's shot put (12.22 m) and 18th in the men's discus (29.86 m) to close out his weekend with a strong push.
On the women's side, junior Fiona Selders was named SAA Women's Track Athlete of the Week after boasting top finishes at the Mississippi College Spring Cleaning Classic on Saturday.
Selders secured an eighth-place finish in the women's 200 meters with a time of 25.29 seconds.
She also participated in the women's 100 Meters, where she placed tenth, completing her race in 12.33 seconds. Selders became the second-fastest runner in program history in the 100 and the third-fastest in the 200.
Classmate Eleanor Scott began her outdoor season with an outstanding performance at the Mississippi College Spring Classic, securing third place in the triple jump (11.11 meters).
Scott also placed fifth in the high jump, clearing 1.45 meters on Saturday, making her hometown of Clinton, Miss., proud.
In the women's hammer, juniors Amelia Bohl (5th, 36.91 m), Reese Brasseaux (8th, 30.46 m), sophomore Viv Jordan (10th, 27.63 m), and senior Amari Jackson-Wright (13th, 25.03 m) all produced top finishes in the event, recording outstanding performances.
In the women's shot put, Jackson-Wright (8th, 10.32 m) and Jordan (10th, 9.79m) both handled their competition well.
Sophomore Laken Day made a difference among her peers as well following ninth place in the women's javelin with a 25.18-meter throw.
Classmate Suzanna Busbee received the final applause for the Majors, finishing both the 200 meters (28th, 28.16) and the women's 200 meters strong. Busbee is also competing on the women's flag football team this spring.
Looking ahead the Majors will continue their Spring Schedule traveling to Memphis, Tenn., for the Rhodes Invitational March 20-21
