SAN ANTONIO, TEXAS, - The Millsaps College softball team played tough and physical in a doubleheader against Trinity University but fell 4–1 and 5–0 on Saturday at the Trinity Softball Field.
Game One: Trinity 4, Millsaps 1, L
Sophomore Caroline Mathis recorded one RBI and a stolen base, while classmate Brynn Arena registered both a stolen base and a hit.
Sophomore Hailey Peterson pitched 2.2 innings inside the circle where she allowed only one run and a walk facing 11 batters.
In the top of the first inning Arena singled to shallow center field and later stole second base to scare off the Tigers defensively.
Millsaps continued to attack the Tigers in the top of the third inning, as freshman Liza Gregg singled to third base and advanced to second on a wild pitch.
Stepping up to the plate, Mathis recorded a sacrifice bunt, executing a suicide squeeze play.
An error was forced by the Tigers' pitcher as she bobbled the ball, allowing Gregg to score from third and give the Majors a 1–0 lead.
Moments later, Mathis stole second base before the Tigers recorded a groundout and a strikeout to end the Majors rhythm.
In the bottom of the fourth inning, Trinity battled back to tie the contest at 1–1 with a double to center field that scored a runner.
The Tigers went on to add three more runs in the inning to take a 4–1 advantage over the Majors.
In the bottom of the fifth inning, the Millsaps defense came alive with a 5–4–3 double play.
The Majors looked to make a comeback in the top of the seventh as junior Allana Vasquez singled to shallow center field.
The Vikings escaped the final inning with three consecutive groundouts to defeat the Majors, 4–1, in Game One.
Game Two: Trinity 5, Millsaps 0, L
Vasquez, Peterson, and Gregg each recorded a hit against the Tigers, while Arena finished Game Two with one walk and a stolen base.
In the top of the first inning, Vasquez singled through the left side of the infield, and Arena later reached base on a walk and stole second to build the Majors offensive tempo.
In the next inning, Peterson singled to shallow center field, and Gregg recorded a hit down the left-field line to continue the Majors' momentum.
At the bottom of the third inning, Trinity singled to center field to score a runner from second base following a throwing error by the Majors.
Soon afterward, the Tigers doubled to center field, scoring two additional runners to build a 4–0 lead.
Trinity extended its lead with a triple in the bottom of the fifth to move ahead 5–0.
The Majors keeping their heads up high in the final inning saw sophomore Ava Palumbo draw a walk, and Cannon reached on a fielder's choice as Palumbo advanced to second base.
Cannon then advanced to second base on a wild pitch, and Palumbo moved to third on the same play. The Tigers recorded the final outs with two swinging strikeouts and a lineout to claim Game Two, 5–0, on Saturday.
