JACKSON, Miss. — Millsaps defeated Huntingdon 4-3 in a thrilling matchup Tuesday at Harper Davis Field. Huntingdon finished with a 17-10 shot advantage and put 13 shots on goal, but Millsaps made 10 saves and scored twice in each half off 10 shot attempts. The Majors scored their most goals in a season-opening match since 2011.
Freshman
Victoria Viquez scored on her only shot and added an assist for a team-high three points. Classmate
Haile Moorer scored and led Millsaps with six shots, putting two on goal.
Suzanna Busbee scored on her lone shot attempt. Freshman
Olivia Umanzor recorded 10 saves across 90 minutes, making five in each half. The teams played nearly the final 30 minutes 10-on-10 after a pair of red cards were given.
Millsaps generated early pressure with a corner kick and had shots from freshman
Madison Perez and Moorer saved before Viquez scored at the end of the 14th minute off a nifty
Henley Havens assist for a 1-0 lead.
Junior
Suzanna Busbee added another goal right off the bench in the 19th minute, finishing a Viquez assist to push Millsaps ahead 2-0.
Huntingdon pressed through the middle of the half, but Umanzor saved attempts from Angelina Mazza, Shaylinn McFarland and Keabetsoe Walker before Kendall Remerow scored in the 39th minute off assists from Walker and Avery Chadwick to make it 2-1. Umanzor added another save on a Chadwick shot in the final minute as Millsaps carried a 2-1 lead into halftime.
Junior
Zillia Biniam put a Millsaps shot on frame in the 50th minute, and Umanzor saved Shaylinn McFarland's attempt three minutes later before red cards were issued to Havens and Marlee Cook in the 61st minute.
Huntingdon tied the match at 2-2 on McFarland's goal at 65:11, but Moorer scored 19 seconds later quickly off the restart and off an assist from Perez to put Millsaps back ahead 3-2.
Walker helped the Hawks answer by scoring from Chadwick in the 73rd minute to even the score at 3-3.
Millsaps later earned a corner at 85:25 before going in front 4-3 an own goal that was header from the box and into the back of the Hawks' net at 85:59. Umanzor preserved the lead with saves on McFarland at 86:23 and Xiomara Barnette at 86:44,
Millsaps finished off the 4-3 win after Shea Eichelberger's shot went left in the 88th minute of action.
