Game Winner: Atkinson's Late Drive Secures Majors First Conference Win

Box Score Jackson, MS - The Millsaps Men's Basketball Team earned their first conference win of the season against Sewanee in the most thrilling way possible - with a game winning shot.

Down by one with four seconds left, Majors sophomore Quinn Atkinson scored the game winner on a drive to the basket in front of a raucous Hangar Dome crowd. Atkinson's game winner secured the first victory in SAA play and completed a furious, late rally for Millsaps. Down by nine points with 3:45 left in play, the Majors finished the game on a 12-2 run, which also handed Sewanee their first loss in conference play.

"Down by nine with 3:45 left we were able to make big shots," Head Men's Basketball Coach Tim Wise said. "Senior Marc Robertson has been an outstanding perimeter shooter for us and he hit three big three's from that seven minute mark down - two in that last four minutes."

Millsaps created a myriad of problems for Sewanee tonight, due in large part to an outstanding defensive effort. The Majors caused 16 Sewanee turnovers, including four in the final three minutes of play. The excellent defending, coupled with a lack of fouls gave Millsaps an added boost late in the game.

"We're very fortunate that we had fouls to give once we started scrambling with the pressure," Coach Wise said. "We still stayed with it in the front court knowing we had fouls to give and that certainly played a little into getting Sewanee out of sync."

Robertson drilled a couple of three pointers down the stretch while junior Brennan Gagen simply could not miss. Gagen went 6-6 from the field and 1-1 on three pointers to end the night with 100% shooting. He and Robertson combined for nine of the final 12 points for the Majors.

"Down by nine with 3:45 left, you have to start getting out of your game plan a little bit," Coach Wise said. "We had a lot of guys make plays and shoot the ball well. We hung in there and made plays with the pressure and scramble, I'm very proud of our guys."

With big three pointers from Gagen and Robertson, the Majors finally moved into a position to take the lead and earn the thrilling victory.

"We actually had three chances there towards the end," Coach Wise said. "The last called timeout I told Quinn (Atkinson), after the previous play where we called isolation for him, that he would make the next one. I didn't think he would get another chance to be quite honest, in this game at least."

Atkinson would get another chance, as the Majors forced one final turnover. With the final defensive play made, the stage was set for the Majors to complete the emphatic come from behind victory.

"We were able to force a turnover and got a good look underneath by Marc (Robertson) that went out of bounds," Coach Wise said. "We wanted to get something going towards the goal to maybe get a whistle and foul called, but Quinn was able to get all the way to the base line and finish strong with his left hand."

Given the circumstances and pressure of the moment, the Majors remained tough to complete the comeback. With seven different ties and nine lead changes, tonight's intense game electrified the record crowd on hand at the Hangar Dome.

"Exciting crowd, really the whole game, but that last five minutes - it was loud," Coach Wise said. "It was very encouraging to our kids, I'm proud of our guys for battling."

The Majors finished the night shooting 27-52 (51.9%) from the field and 5-16 (31.3%) on three pointers. Marc Robertson and Brennan Gagen led the Majors in scoring with 17 points each while Quinn Atkinson finished with 13. Alex Gerchow also totaled 11 points as the Majors outscored Sewanee in points off turnovers (24-14) and points in the paint (22-18).

Tonight's thrilling win sets up another conference home game this Sunday, Jan. 24th against Centre College.

"I'm really proud for our men," Coach Wise said. "We'll come back and get ready for another big game against Centre on Sunday."

Tip off against the Colonels from the Hangar Dome is set for 2:00 pm.
