BOX SCORE: Jackson, MS – The Millsaps Women's Tennis Team fell in their opening match to Belhaven on Tuesday 5-4.
The match played earlier in the week began the season for Millsaps Women's Tennis, as they welcome the addition of new courts at the Tennis Complex this year. The young Majors faced a tough hill to climb down 0-3 after doubles play, but fought back in singles winning 4 of 6 matches later in the day.
Tori Barbier put the Majors on the board with a dominant performance winning 6-1, 6-1. In the three spot,
Jordyn Kanak faced a tough challenge after dropping the first set, but responded well by winning the next 4-2. Kanak's opponent retired in the third, leaving the door open for a comeback opportunity.
The Majors fell in the singles four spot matchup, which clinched the match overall for Belhaven. Despite the Blazers clinching the match, the one and two spot matchups proved to be both exciting and intense.
At the one spot,
Ashley Ford defeated her opponent - an ITA ranked transfer from NC Wesleyan - 6-2, 6-4. In the two spot,
Audrey Bennett earned an intense, emotional come from behind win.
After splitting the first two sets, Bennett entered a 10-point tiebreaker to determine the winner. With the set tied 7-7, Bennett won the next three points to secure the match win for Millsaps.
Overall, the first match proved to be a great learning experience for the young Majors.
"It was exciting to see some of our freshmen get their first team wins in Audrey and Jordyn and Tori," Head Tennis Coach
Jason Box said. "We have some work to do in doubles, I feel like we got better yesterday, but we look forward to getting back out on the court Friday and Sunday of this weekend."
Next up for Millsaps Women's Tennis is another nonconference home matchup. The Majors face Touglaoo College this Friday, Feb. 19th starting at 3:00 pm.
