Sewanee, TN –
Cassidy DeNoon pitched a perfect game while the Millsaps Softball team scored 34 combined runs in a pair of conference road wins over Sewanee on Saturday.
The Majors swept Saturday's double-header to earn their fourth conference series win of the season and improve to 20-19 (9-8) on the year. Millsaps' offense went off for a season high 38 combined runs to solidify wins of 11-0 and 23-3 – both of which were secured before the seventh inning.
Millsaps sophomore pitcher
Cassidy DeNoon entered the weekend top five in ERA (2.43) and wins (14) for the Southern Athletic Association. The ace for the Majors continued her excellent play with her best performance yet. DeNoon retired 18 straight Tigers in the first game of the day pitching six scoreless innings with no walks while striking out seven batters.
Saturday's perfection comes as no surprise to the Majors either, as DeNoon nearly pitched a perfect game back in March for a 1-0 win over nationally ranked Birmingham Southern. Her outstanding performance would be all the Majors needed to secure a game one win as well.
The offense for Millsaps produced 11 runs on 18 hits to end the contest in the sixth inning. Nearly every Major recorded a hit as designated hitter
Hannah Doggett led the team in hits and RBI with three each.
DeNoon's day was complete after the perfect game, which improved her record to 15-12 on the year. The offensive firepower by the Majors, however, was just getting started.
The Majors followed up the early win with an unprecedented 23 runs on 20 hits in the second game of the day.
Megan Murray recorded a season high five RBIs while
Sarah Scales and
Rayne Gravat recorded four each. Gravat also led in hits with four as starting pitcher
Mary Claire Shepard earned her fifth win of the season giving up eight hits on three runs and striking out two batters.
After a scoreless first, Millsaps scored nine in the second, 11 in the fourth and three in the fifth to secure the convincing 20-run win in five innings of play. With the series win secured, the Majors will look to sweep the Tigers for the final game of the regular season.
Now at 20-19, the Majors will close out the series – and regular season – with a third and final game tomorrow, April 17th. First pitch between the Majors and Tigers is set for 12:00 pm at Sewanee's Softball Field.
