Walk-off in Extra Innings Highlights Softball Series Win on Saturday

Jackson, MS – The Millsaps Softball team secured their third conference series victory of the season with a pair of double-header wins over Centre at home.

Saturday's double-header win improves Millsaps Softball to 18-13 (7-4) on the year, as they began the day with an intense comeback victory.  After trailing 5-0 through four innings, the Majors began a furious comeback that sent the game to extra innings.  In the ninth, Rayne Gravat reached on a fielder's choice that scored Kat Romero – and secured the thrilling win for Millsaps.

In the second game, Millsaps got things started early scoring once in the third and once in the fourth inning.  Centre would later tie the game in the fifth, but the resilient Majors answered to retake the lead in the bottom half of the inning – and never looked back.

Millsaps secured the series win with a 3-2, game two victory, as the trio of Kat Romero, Missy Romero and Rayne Gravat led in hits with four each.  Rayne Gravat and Hannah Doggett led in RBI with two apiece while Kat Romero, Missy Romero, MK Bozeman and Kaitlyn Casias each recorded one as well.

Two Majors' pitchers saw the mound for today's double-header as Cassidy DeNoon and Mary Claire Shepard both earn wins pitching complete games.

After trailing 5-0 through four innings in the first game, Kat Romero put the Majors on the board with a triple to right field.  Missy Romero then scored Kat Romero on an RBI single.

In the following inning, designated hitter Hannah Doggett continued the positive momentum with an RBI double to right center.  Kaitlyn Casias then scored Megan Murray on a sacrifice fly out to right field.  MK Bozeman later solidified the comeback with an RBI single to tie the game 5-5 in the sixth.

From there, neither team would score in the seventh, as the contest would be decided in extra innings.

In the decisive ninth, the Colonels threatened with a runner at second base and two outs.  Centre singled through the right side, however, a great throw from Kat Romero to Rayner LeBlanc threw out the advancing runner at home plate.  Romero's throw ended the scoring threat – and potential game winning run for Centre.

In the bottom half of the inning, the Majors put an exclamation point on the comeback.  Kat Romero got things started with a leadoff single.  Missy Romero then singled with a well-placed bunt, which allowed Kat Romero to advance to third on the throw.  Megan Murray was then walked, as the bases were loaded with no outs.

Needing a hit to win the game, first baseman Rayne Gravat stepped up for an opportune at-bat.  Gravat delivered with an RBI fielder's choice to score Romero and secure the walk-off comeback victory.

The Majors followed the thrilling game one victory with another close win in game two.  Megan Murray and Rayne Gravat both put the Majors on the board with RBI singles while Hannah Doggett reached with the bases loaded on a fielder's choice, scoring Missy Romero in the fifth inning.

In all, the Majors secured the game two win with three runs on 10 hits and an error.   Starting pitcher Mary Claire Shepard earned the win giving up just two runs on four hits in a complete game pitched.

Now at 18-13, the Millsaps Softball team will look to earn their first series sweep of the season with another matchup against Centre tomorrow, April 3rd.  First pitch for game three between the Majors and Colonels is set for 12:00 pm at the Millsaps Softball Complex.
