Jackson, Miss. (Feb. 24, 2017) – In a matchup of two regionally ranked teams, the Millsaps College women's tennis team came out on top over Covenant College, 7-2. Ranked No. 15 in the Atlantic South rankings by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA), the Majors won the first five points over the No. 18 ranked Scots to clinch the contest. Junior
Reya Hayek (Greenville, Miss.) picked up the match-clinching win for the Majors with her victory at No. 5 singles.
Millsaps (4-2) swept through the doubles matches, losing no more than three games in each. The Majors' No. 1 team of freshman
Rachel Beck (Metairie, La.) and sophomore
Jordyn Kanak (Austin, Texas) started the sweep with their 8-2 win over Claire Luger and Gracie Smith. Millsaps then went on to take a 3-0 lead in the match with 8-3 wins in the other two doubles contests.
At No. 6 sophomore
Tori Barbier (Metairie, La.) put Millsaps one point closer to the team win with her 6-2, 6-0 decision over Morgan McCain. Hayek then put it in the win column for the Majors in her No. 5 match, downing her opponent 6-0, 6-4 to clinch it.
Millsaps' other two victories came in straight sets as well, with Beck taking a 6-3, 6-2 win at No. 3 and freshman
Maggie Dabadie (Baton Rouge, La.) taking a 7-5, 6-0 decision at No. 1.
Covenant (2-4) avoided the shutout by winning the final two matches decided. Luger took a close first set over Kanak at No. 2 on her way to a 7-6 (5), 6-3 win, while Smith also took a close first set in her No. 4 match, finishing with a 7-5, 6-4 victory over junior
Mary Claiborne-Sharpe (Brownsville, Tenn.).
Millsaps will be back on the courts on Thursday, March 2 when the Majors will play at local rival Belhaven University starting at 3:00 p.m.
