HILTON HEAD, S.C. (Mar. 14, 2017) – Another pair of wins for the Millsaps College men's tennis team on its spring break trip brought the Majors winning streak to six. Today in Hilton Head, Millsaps started with a 6-3 win over the University of Texas at Dallas, ranked No. 19 in the West region, and then finished by blanking Fairleigh Dickinson-Florham, 9-0.
Match 1 vs. UT-Dallas
Millsaps (12-3) opened against UT-Dallas (3-1) by taking the first two doubles matches that were decided. At No. 2 junior
Diego Marti-Vertiz (San Luis Potosi, Mexico) and freshman
Brandon Beck (Metairie, La.) won 8-4 to put the first point on the board for the Majors. The No. 1 team of sophomore
Davis Plummer (Richardson, Texas) and junior
Alex Centurion (Portland, Ore.) then made it 2-0 with an 8-3 victory before the Comets pair of Eric Chen and Ashwin Vaithianathan brought their team back within a point with a close 8-6 win at No. 3.
Junior
Avinash Ananth (Hoover, Ala.) started Millsaps off on the right foot in singles play by taking a 7-5, 6-3 win at No. 5. Marti-Vertiz then followed that up at No. 1 with a strong 6-0, 6-3 decision over Christian Duarte that put the Majors up 4-1. UT-Dallas then closed to two points when Hurdley Ravula came back from a second set loss to Plummer to score a 6-4, 2-6, 10-5 win at No. 4.
Centurion then ended any hopes of a comeback by the Comets when he dispatched Mario Jelev in the No. 2 match by a 6-4, 6-2 score. The two squads then split the remaining two matches, with sophomore
Henry Friedler (New Orleans, La.) getting the victory for the Majors at No. 3, 6-3, 6-4.
Match 2 vs. Fairleigh Dickinson
Millsaps started strong against Fairleigh Dickinson- Florham (1-3) and never looked back as they rolled on to blank the Devils. Sophomore
Brian Deason (Birmingham, Ala.) and sophomore
Josh Shearin (Cordova, Tenn.) started things off for the Majors with an 8-0 blanking of their opponents at No. 3 doubles. Millsaps then went on to take the Nos. 1 and 2 matches by 8-2 and 8-4 scores.
Junior
Cameron Doles (Metairie, La.) picked up the first point for Millsaps in singles play, blanking his opponent, 6-0, 6-0. At No. 5. Freshman
Jacob Niehaus (Gretna, La.) then put the deciding fifth point on the board for the Majors as he defeated Chris Ly in the No. 3 match, 6-1, 6-1. Millsaps then went on to capture the remaining singles matches in straight sets to complete the sweep, the fifth of the season for the Majors.
Another pair of matches tomorrow will close out the spring trip break for Millsaps to Hilton Head. The Majors will play Georgetown College first, followed by an afternoon match against Gordon College.
