ATLANTA, Ga. (Mar. 17, 2017) – Ending its spring break trip with a match against the No. 1 team in the nation, Emory University, the Millsaps College men's tennis squad could not find a win against the talented Eagle squad, falling 9-0. The defeat snapped a season-best, eight-match win streak by the Majors.
Starting in doubles play, Emory (6-3) picked up an 8-2 win at No. 2, but Millsaps (14-4) won more games in the other matches. Playing against the top-ranked team in the nation at No. 3, sophomore
Henry Friedler (New Orleans, La.) and freshman
Jacob Niehaus (Gretna, La.) won four games from David Omsky and Jonathan Jemison. At No. 1, the Millsaps team of sophomore
Davis Plummer (Richardson, Texas) and junior
Alex Centurion (Portland, Ore.) faced the No. 18 ranked team of Scott Rubinstein and James Spaulding, taking five games off them before falling.
Millsaps also faced a pair of nationally ranked players in singles play. At No. 1, junior
Diego Marti-Vertiz (San Luis Potosi, Mexico) faced off with the top-ranked player in the nation, Aman Manji. Marti-Vertiz played well against his opponent, winning at least three games in each set of his 6-3, 6-4 setback. Junior
Alex Centurion (Portland, Ore.) faced tenth-ranked Jemison in the No. 2 match, but could not come up with an upset as Jemison took a 6-1, 6-2 win.
Friedler made a strong bid for a comeback in his No. 3 match against Adrien Bouchet, but came up just short of extending the contest to a third set in a 6-1, 7-6 defeat. Emory went on to take the bottom three flights in straight sets as well to complete the sweep.
Next up for Millsaps will be its first Southern Athletic Association (SAA) match of the season. The Majors will open conference play on the road with a match at Birmingham-Southern on Friday, March 24 at 1:30 p.m.
