RICHARDSON, Texas. – On Saturday, the Millsaps College women's tennis team hit the road for the first time in 2018. The Majors were in Richardson, Texas for a match with #24 Southwestern University. The Pirates led 2-1 after doubles play, but Millsaps fought hard. The Majors tied things up 4-4, but Southwestern was able to take the #5 singles match to escape with the 5-4 win.
In doubles play
Grace Gaskins and
Maggie Dabadie scored a big 8-1 win at #1 to give Millsaps their first point. Unfortunately, the Pirates took the other two doubles matches and led 2-1 heading into singles.
Southwestern grabbed wins at #2 and #3 singles to stretch their lead out to 4-1. With their backs against the wall the Majors dug in. At #4
Ella Shields won 6-4, 6-4 and at #6
Jordyn Kanak took a 7-5, 6-4 win to make it 4-3.
Gaskins scored a win at the #1 spot for Millsaps in a three-set match to knot things up at 4-4. Unfortunately, the #24 ranked Pirates prevailed at #5 singles to clinch the fifth point.
The Majors return to the court tomorrow morning for a match with Austin College. Action is set to begin at 10:00am
