JACKSON, Miss. – The #28 Millsaps College women's tennis team played their first SAA match on Sunday afternoon when they welcomed Birmingham Southern to the Coach Montgomery Tennis Courts.
In a match that featured a lengthy rain delay midway through doubles play, the Majors swept the three doubles matches, and capped off their win in singles action to move their record to 8-5 on the year. BSC falls to 7-4 this season.
The team of
Reya Hayek and
Ella Shields got things going with a big 8-5 win at #3 doubles. At #1
Ashley Ford and
Grace Gaskins trailed 7-6 at one point, but they ran off three straight points to take the 9-7 win.
Maggie Dabadie and
Rachel Beck led early on in their match, but late they found themselves down 8-7. They rallied to hold off one match point, and after changing ends picked up the 9-8 win.
With the Majors leading 3-0 the match moved into singles play.
After Birmingham Southern picked up a point at singles #1, Dabadie scored a win at #2 by scores of 7-6, 6-0. At #3 Shields had a dominant performance to clinch the match for the Majors. She knocked off her opponent 6-3, 7-5.
What's Next?
Millsaps hits the road for their next two matches. The Majors will be at Centre College on Friday and at Sewanne on Saturday.
