MEMPHIS, Tenn.– The Millsaps College women's tennis team was on the road for a pair of non-conference matches on Saturday. In the first match the Majors upset #23 DePauw University 5-4. In the final match of the day Millsaps fell by the identical 5-4 score to NCAA Division II Christian Brothers University.
Some strong play in doubles action set the tone for the upset in the first match.
Grace Gaskins and
Maggie Dabadie scored a 8-6 win at #1, and the combo of
Jillian Sandoz and
Reya Hayek notched a thrilling 9-8 win at #2 to give the Majors a 2-1 advantage after doubles.
DePauw quickly tied things up at the start of singles, but Gaskins won #1 6-2, 6-0 to reclaim the lead for Millsaps. After DePauw answered back at the #3 spot, Dabadie and
Ella Shields took back-to-back wins at #2 and #4 to clinch the match for the Majors. In the #2 match, Dabadie held off a match point on the way to her win.
The second match was just as close, but unfortunately this time it was Millsaps who came up on the short end of a 5-4 score.
The Majors held a 2-1 lead after doubles thanks to wins by Shields /
Morgan Jenkins and
Tori Barbier / Sandoz. Unfortunately Christian Brothers made the comeback in singles play.
Gaskins scored a 6-5, 6-1 win at #1, and Barbier beat her opponent 6-3, 6-4 at #6. But CBU took the final and deciding match 6-3, 6-4 at #4 to claim the win.
