Women’s Tennis Season Ends with SAA Championship Loss to #11 Sewanee

MURFREESBORO, Tenn. – On Saturday, the Millsaps College women's tennis team advanced to their first conference championship match since joining the Southern Athletic Association. The Majors took on the top seed, and #11 team in the country Sewanee on Sunday morning.

Sewanee's lineup boasted a pair of regionally ranked doubles' combinations, and four regionally ranked individual players. The Tigers were able to take the first five matches, and claim their sixth straight SAA Championship by a 5-0 score.

Millsaps ends the season with an overall record of 15-7. They finished conference play with a 6-1 mark. Their only two SAA losses came at the hands of Sewanee with one of them being this morning's conference championship.

Seniors, Ashley Ford and Rachel Beck earned a spot on the SAA All-Tournament team. Beck scored a pair of doubles wins on the weekend playing alongside Maggie Dabadie at the number two spot. In yesterday's semifinal match against Centre, Ford picked up a 6-1, 6-0 win at #2 singles and an 8-4 win alongside Grace Gaskins at #1 doubles.

It was a historic 2018 season on courts for the Majors. Earlier this season, for the first time in over thirty years, the women's program found themselves ranked inside the 2017-2018 Oracle/ITA Division II Collegiate Tennis Rankings. They reached as high as #28 nationally. In the most recent poll they were the #9 team in the Atlantic South region.
