JACKSON, Miss. -- Saturday afternoon was homecoming on the campus of Millsaps College and the Majors welcomed the Tigers of Trinity University to Harper Davis Field for a Southern Athletic Association (SAA) matchup.
Millsaps put the first touchdown on the scoreboard, but strong play from the Tigers in the game's middle quarters gave them a two possession lead in the 4th quarter. The Majors rallied late, but unfortunately came up short in a 24-17 loss.
The Millsaps record now stands at 4-3 overall. They are 2-3 in the SAA. Trinity improves to 4-2 overall and 3-1 in league play.
How It Happened
The Majors won the toss and elected to start the game on offense. A balanced attack, mixing runs with short, intermediate passing routes allowed Millsaps to put together a ten play drive that was capped off by a
Fritz Walker III two-yard rushing touchdown.
Hunter Sellen's PAT attempt was good, and with 9:10 left to play in the opening quarter the Majors held a 7-0 lead.
The ensuing Trinity drive ended with a missed field goal from the Tigers, but three plays later a Millsaps fumble gave the ball back to Trinity.
Both teams exchanged a pair of possessions without scoring any points, until midway through the 2nd quarter the Tigers scored on a 62-yard pass play to tie things up at 7-7.
The Majors answered that with a six play drive that resulted in a 32-yard field goal from Sellen. Unfortunately, Trinity responded by scoring a touchdown with less than one minute remaining in the second quarter to take a 14-10 lead to the halftime locker room.
The Tigers opened up the 3rd quarter scoring with a field goal to push their lead out to 17-10, and after a Millsaps three-and-out added a touchdown to their total to take a 24-10 lead with 7:12 left to play in the quarter.
Trinity had several more opportunities deep in Majors territory down the stretch, but each time the Millsaps defense was up to the task to keep the Tigers off of the scoreboard.
Unfortunately, the only score the Majors would get in the second half was on a six-yard pass from
Amryn Jeffrey to
Austin Russell early in the 4th quarter.
Millsaps had a pair of chances on offense late in the game but both times the drive stalled as Trinity held on for the 24-17 win.
Notables
Offensively, while Walker had the team's only rushing touchdown, it was freshman
Carrington Wooden who led the ground attack with 75 yards on 13 attempts. Through the air Jeffrey finished 18-29 for 176 yards and the touchdown. Russell led the receiving corps with a team-high six receptions for 62 yards and a score.
On the defensive side of the ball, senior
Reid Evans, who was honored pre-game as the 2019 Juan Joseph Memorial Award Winner, led Millsaps with a game-high 11 tackles.
Mickale Massey added nine tackles, while
Liam Vincifora had six, including two tackles-for-loss. Vincifora also added 1.5 sacks to his SAA-leading total of 9.5 on the season.
