Offense Shines as Football Cruises to 49-25 Win at Sewanee

SEWANEE, Tenn. -- The Millsaps College football team was back in action on Saturday afternoon as the Majors traveled to Sewanee for a Southern Athletic Association matchup against the Tigers.

The offense scored early and often on their way to a 48-25 blowout win.

The victory puts the Majors at 5-3 overall. They are 3-3 in the SAA. Sewanee falls to 0-9 overall and 0-7 in league play.

How It Happened
The Majors won the toss, but elected to defer their choice until the second half.

On the very first play from scrimmage Alvin Joseph made the first of two interceptions, and returned the ball into Sewanee territory to set the offense up in scoring position.

Unfortunately, the opening Millsaps drive stalled out.

Sewanee took back over, but on 3rd down Joseph made his second interception of the afternoon to give the ball to the Majors.

This time the offense went on an eight-play drive that was capped off by a 17-yard pass from Amryn Jeffrey to Austin Russell for a touchdown. Hunter Sellen's PAT attmept was good and the Majors led 7-0 midway through the opening quarter.

After a Tiger three-and-out, the offense regained possession. Another eight-play drive ensued, this time it was finished off by a 20-yard pass from Jeffrey to Moise Tezzo for the score.

Unfortunately, Sewanee responded with an 81-yard rushing touchdown on their next drive to cut the lead to 14-7. That score would hold until the halftime break.

The third quarter is when the Majors started to pull away from the Tigers.

Despite Sewanee scoring first on a field goal, the Majors got a 5-yard rushing touchdown from Fritz Walker III, and another Jeffrey to Russell touchdown to pass to push their lead out to 28-10.

The proverbial nail in the coffin was a 12-play, 99-yard drive that was capped off with a 13-yard scoring strike from Jeffrey to Tezzo. Sellen's PAT put Millsaps ahead 35-10 with 9:02 left to play in the game.

With the outcome all but secured, Chris Chandler and TJ Bush were able to score the first touchdowns of their collegiate career, as the Majors outscored Sewanee 21-15 in the 4th quarter to secure the 49-25 win.

Notables
Offensively, Jeffrey threw for a career-high 377 yards and tied a season-high with four touchdown passes.

As a team Millsaps ran for 267 yards on 48 attempts. Three different players found the endzone, but it was Walker who led the way with 89 yards.

Russell went over 200 receiving yards for the first time in his career, and added a season-high 11 receptions. Meanwhile Tezzo needed just five receptions to total 100+ receiving yards for the first time this year.

On the defensive side of the ball Dylan Higgins made seven total tackles to lead the team. Bryan Van Uden posted his first career sack, while Joseph's two interceptions led the secondary.
