FULTON, Mo. -- On Saturday, the Millsaps College football team went on the road for the first time in 2019. The Majors traveled to Missouri for a non-conference matchup with the Westminster College Blue Jays.
Westminster scored first on a field goal, but Millsaps responded with 35 unanswered points en route to a 35-10 win.
The Majors improve to 2-0 on the season while the Blue Jays fall to 0-2.
How It Happened
The teams exchanged scoreless possessions in the early portion of the first quarter, but it was Westminster who got on the board first with a field goal on their second offensive possession.
From that point on it was all Millsaps.
The Majors first score came on a tackle by
Drew Hopkins for a safety to make it 3-2 with 3:30 left to play in the opening quarter. On the ensuing drive Millsaps went 57 yards in 8 plays, capping it off with on a 13-yard pass from
Amryn Jeffrey to
Austin Russell for the touchdown.
After the defense forced a three-and-out, the offense responded with a methodical 14-play drive that ended with a 10-yard pass to
Fritz Walker III to make it 14-3 Majors with 7:59 to play in the half.
The defense again held the Blue Jays, and a poor punt set Millsaps up with good field position.
This time it took just four plays, the fourth being a 7-yard touchdown run by Walker. The two-point conversion attempt was unsuccessful, but with 2:58 left until halftime the Majors led 20-3.
Again the defense was up to the task forcing another three-and-out to give the ball back to the offense.
15 plays later the offense was back in the endzone, this time on a 2-yard pass to Russell. That two-point try was good allowing the Millsaps to carry a 28-3 lead to the halftime locker room.
Westminster could not get anything going to open the second half as they were forced to punt the ball back to the Majors after running just three offensive plays.
When Millsaps took over, the offense produced another long scoring drive to put the game out of reach. The drive ended with another 2-yard strike from Jeffrey to Russell.
Hunter Sellen's PAT attempt was good, and Millsaps led 35-3 with 10:23 left to play in the 3rd quarter.
The Blue Jays were able to get in the endzone early in the 4th quarter, but Millsaps continued to dominate the game late to finish off the 35-10 win.
Notables
Jeffrey finished the day 26-47 through the air for 272 yards and four touchdowns. The Majors combined for 132 yards on the ground, but it was Walker who led the way with 67 yards and a score on 14 carries.
