JACKSON, Miss. -- On Saturday night, the Millsaps College football team opened up the Southern Athletic Association (SAA) portion of their schedule by hosting the Lynx of Rhodes College.
The Majors capitalized on a Rhodes miscue early on to lead 14-0 at halftime. The entire second half was dominated by the defenses and special teams units.
In the end Millsaps held on for the win.
The victory improves the Majors' record to 3-0 overall and 1-0 in the SAA. Rhodes falls to 0-3 and 0-1 in league play.
How It Happened
Millsaps won the coin toss and elected to receive but their initial drive stalled out.
After a punt Rhodes took over, but they fumbled on their second play from scrimmage to give the Majors outstanding field position.
Three plays later
Fritz Walker III took a handoff and found the endzone from four yards out for the game's opening touchdown.
Hunter Sellen's PAT attempt was good, and Millsaps led 7-0 with 10:01 to play in the first quarter.
Later, Rhodes looked to respond on a lengthy drive that carried over into the second quarter, but they were unsuccessful on a 22-yard field goal attempt.
A few drives after that the Majors' offense took over after a Lynx three-and-out. Nine plays and 58-yards later Millsaps was back in the endzone.
The drive was highlighted by a 20-yard run from
Carrington Wooden and a 17-yard scamper by Walker. It was capped off with a 5-yard pass from
Amryn Jeffrey to
Brandon Stockerl for the score.
Again Sellen's PAT attempt was true and the Majors led 14-0 with just 3:24 remaining until halftime. That score held until the break.
The second half adjustments by both defenses were more than successful as the game settled in to a battle of field position.
Millsaps would have the advantage there.
Additionally the defense forced a pair of turnovers on downs and another Rhodes fumble. All told, the two first half scores proved to be the difference in the Majors' 14-0 win.
Notables
As a team Millsaps racked up 200 yards of offense on the ground. Walker led the way with 31 carries for 120 yards and a touchdown. Wooden added 79 yards on 12 attempts.
