Baseball Falls to Edgewood in Final Game of Millsaps Invitational

JACKSON, Miss. -- The Millsaps College baseball team returned to Twenty Field on Saturday night for the final game in their first invitational tournament. The Majors took on the Eagles of Edgewood College

Millsaps rallied back from a deficit, but the Eagles plated a run in the top of the 9th inning to give them a 5-4 win.

The loss drops the Majors to 2-5 overall on the season.

How It Happened
Edgewood opened up the scoring in the top of the 3rd inning with a sacrifice fly to take a 1-0 lead.

Millsaps got that run right back in the bottom half however when Fritz Walker III drove home Jimmy Johnstone on a RBI groundout to tie the game at 1-1.

The teams exchanged runs again in the 5th inning. This time the Eagles scored on a Millsaps error, but the Majors responded with a RBI double from Jon Dale Dieckman to make it 2-2.

The top of of the 6th inning saw Edgewood score two more unearned runs to retake the lead at 4-2.

The Majors went quietly in their half of the 6th, but after Ryan Erwin pitched a scoreless top of the 7th, the offense went to work in the bottom half of the inning.

Dylan McFarland drew a leadoff walk, he was brought home on a Dieckman single. Mark Petkovsek followed that up with his own RBI single, scoring Walker to tie the game at 4-4.

Unfortunately the Eagles scored the go-ahead run on a balk in the top of the 9th and held off Millsaps in the bottom half to escape with a 5-4 win.

Key Contributors
McFarland, Johnstone and Dieckman all had multiple hits on the night for the Majors, while McFarland and Petkovsek each had a stolen base.

On the mound, Langston Haden got the start and turned in a quality outing. He pitched 5.2 innings, and allowed just two hits and no earned runs.

What's Next?
The Majors hit the road on Tuesday evening for a midweek contest against East Texas Baptist University. First pitch is scheduled for 4:00 p.m.
