MONTGOMERY, Ala. – Following a month away from competition, the Millsaps men's and women's cross country teams showed no signs of rust by sweeping individual and team titles at the Huntingdon College Invitational on Friday.
Junior
Landry Lemoine raced to victory in the men's 8-kilometer run (27:55.9), while senior
Isabel Baird won by 13 seconds in the women's 6-kilometer (25:16).
The Majors won the men's competition by nearly 50 points (26-74) over runner-up University of the South on the heels of all five scorers placing in the top 10. On the women's side, Millsaps edged the University of the South by a single point (29-30) thanks to all scorers finishing in the top 12.
Lemoine edged out sophomore teammate
Patrick Elliott for the top spot in the men's race. Elliott crossed the line in a blistering time of 28:07.9, nearly 15 seconds ahead of third place Mac Brooks of Huntingdon. Both Lemoine and Elliott averaged under 5:40 per mile on hilly terrain.
Senior
Grant Yancey wasn't far behind in fourth place, posting a time of 28:47.4. All three Major runners earned All-SAA Conference honors in the spring and look in prime form early in the fall season.
A pair of rising freshmen
Ryan Skates and
Adam Atigh posted impressive performances and rounded out the Millsaps scoring. Skates ended the meet in 10th at 29:30.7, while Atigh finished in 11th with a time of 29:50.9
The women's team scoring was much closer, but the Majors left Montgomery victorious by a single place. Baird and classmate
Rose Ward powered the way by setting personal-best 6K times. Baird cooked with a 25:16 (or 6:46.6-minute mile), while Ward ended the meet in third, clocking 25:41.5.
Rising freshman
Sarah Strickland provided a crucial fourth-place showing (25:47.3) in her first effort at the distance. In the thick of it was junior
Angelle Martin, who crossed the line ninth overall (27:11.3).
The race came down to graduate runner
Abby Tew and the fifth scorer for the University of the South. Tew was able to outpace six Sewanee Tigers and grab 12th place (28:02.6) and give the Majors the victory.
Millsaps will compete close to home next Saturday, Oct. 9 in Clinton at the Mississippi College/Watson Invitational. The first race is slated for an 8 a.m. start.
