BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Millsaps sophomore men's track and field distance runner
Landry Lemoine was seconds away from the 5,000-meter school record on March 19 but left no doubt as he set a new program mark on Friday at the Hilltop Classic.
Lemoine's historic day highlighted several standout performances by both the men's and women's track and field programs at General Krulak Stadium.
He posted a wicked-fast time of 15:46.21, crushing the old mark of 15:49.98 set by Ben Parva in 2013. Just a week prior, Lemoine posted an impressive mark of 15:52.8 demonstrating the record was in reach.
Other strong showings on the men's side were featured in the sprints, middle distance, 4x100m relay and field events.
Both
Shane Cockrell and
Samuel Saia set personal records in the 200-meter dash and 800-meter run, respectively. Cockrell (18th) clocked in at 23.67, while Saia (10th) posted a quality time of 2:01.93.
The 4x100m squad of
Landon Wimberley,
Christopher Butler,
Nic Hayes and
Moise Tezzo finished third in 44.89. Butler powered through an injury and was able to make a successful handoff for the Majors.
Christopher Shead and
Jakob Myers-Heldt improved tremendously over the previous meet in the discus. Shead (sixth) threw it 31.65m and Myers-Heldt (eighth) reached 29.66m. Shead also finished sixth in the hammer with a distance of 33.03m.
Storm Buescher, the 2019 SAA high jump champion, finished second on Friday with a height of 1.95m. Other top-10 performances included
William Weber in the pole vault (third, 4.10m) and Butler in the long jump (eighth, 6.43m)
On the women's side, the theme of top-10 showings continued across the board. The Major trio of
Abby Tew (21:45.57),
Lily Pudlik (22:18.33) and
Angelle Martin (22:41.83) finished six through eight in the 5,000m. Another runner who stood out was
Isabel Baird, who clocked a 2:33.42 for 10th place in the 800m.
Freshman
Annabelle Grace Wilder posted a fourth place showing in the pole vault at 2.90m. Additionally,
Rose Ward and
Sophia Brouillette each ended the meet in sixth for their respective events. Ward threw the hammer 39.38m and Brouillette reached 28.07m in the javelin.
Two more Majors to crack the top 10 were
Kai Horne (eighth) and
Khloe Colar (ninth) in the long jump. Horne leapt 4.40m and Colar bounded 4.23m.
Millsaps will next compete at the Rhodes 7-Way Meet in Memphis, Tenn. on Saturday, April 3.
