JACKSON, Miss. – The Millsaps track and field programs competed against rival Belhaven in the Border Battle track meet on Saturday. Senior distance runner
Samuel Saia highlighted the meet with a record-breaking time in the 800-meter run.
Saia paced with his teammate
Patrick Elliott, who came in second and also broke the previous record and broke the two-minute barrier. Saia posted a blistering time of 1:59.06, while Elliott crossed the line in 1:59.49. The previous school record was set by
Travis Hebeler in 2015 with a time of 2:00.45.
On the men's side, the Majors featured 11 first-place finishes in the meet.
In the Major's first-ever time participating in the 3000-meter run,
Landry Lemoine set the initial time to beat. Coming in first place, he ran a time of 9:18.55.
Grant Yancey came in second at 9:36.03.
Yancey, Lemoine, Saia and Elliott also teamed in the 4x800-meter relay and set a new school standard in 8:26.98. The previous best dating back to 2013 of 8:46.02 was shattered.
In the 100-meter dash,
Landon Wimberley won with a time of 11.63.
Shane Cockrell also showed well coming in third place with a time of 11.91. The same two Majors placed first and third again in the 200-meter dash with times of 22.79 and 23.94, respectively.
Jakob Myers-Heldt threw an impressive 37.19m for second place in the javelin throw.
Chris Butler also came in first while showing life in his legs with a long jump of 6.27m.
Will Weber gained a new personal record and came in first place in the men's pole vault at 4.00m.
Christopher Shead also won his event by tossing an impressive 35.97m in the hammer throw.
Five Millsaps women placed first on Saturday as well.
Sophomore
Alyssa Navarre secured a win in the 800-meter run at 2:29.76.
Isabel Baird and
Alli Despaux came in the silver and bronze positions with times of 2:30.90 and 2:38.01.
Abby Tew (12:17.71),
Lily Pudlik (12:38.00) and
Katie Williams (13:03.01) came in first through third, respectively in the 3000-meter run.
Sophia Brouillette exhibited tremendous power coming first in the javelin throw (27.18m), second in the discus throw (21.54m) and third in the shot put (8.52m)
Sophomore dual-sport athlete
Emily Sims won the high jump at 1.37m.
Rose Ward was a first-place winner in the hammer throw at 40.71m.
In the 400-meter dash,
Kai Horne was a second-place finisher at 1:05.76. Horne also came in second in the long jump (4.74m), while
Khloe Colar placed third (4.67m)
The team of
Navarre,
Carolina Teague, Horne and
Khloe Colar earned a second-place finish in the 4X100-meter relay with a time of 52.62.
Up next: The Majors will travel to Memphis, Tenn., for the SAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships, April 23-24.
